 Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Info
Posted by Doom_Dude on Monday, April 30, 2001

Over at ign.com is an interesting intelligence report on the upcoming, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind game. Heres a chunk of the report.
There will be about 50 to 60 unique monster models, undoubtedly featuring some familiar faces from previous games, as well as many unique to the Morrowind setting. One interesting creature is the Kwaama warrior, which is actually made up of two individual creatures, a soft, worm-like forager that serves as the brains of the outfit, and a hard, four-legged, hollow-bodied worker, which adds armor and mobility for its companion.
Also at the bottom of the page is some very kewl screenshots.
Further Morrowind information can be found at voodooextreme.com where the interesting Morowind Design Diary V article can be viewed. Check it out!

  •  Day of Defeat Review - AVault
Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

The Adrenaline Vault posted a nice review of the WWII-based Half-Life mod, Day of Defeat. Here's a blurb:
But when you look at everything Day of Defeat offers, what you’ll find is an incredibly well made and enjoyable mod, and a shining example of how people can get together to create the kind of game they want. I find it pretty interesting that in a time when gamers are awaiting the release of two major World War II-themed commercial titles, namely Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, there exists a free product that offers what is arguably the most intense World War II gameplay experience to date.

     Laptop Shootout - 3D Spotlight
Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

    Tonight, 3D Spotlight had a look at two Mobile-Celeron laptops that are selling in great quantities, the Celeron 500 based FIC A430 and the Toshiba Satellite Pro 4270/ 4310. Here's a snip;

The Toshiba employs a Logitech Trackpoint device (nipple), from my previous experiences, once the user gets used to it, is very easy to use and provides with a comfortable position. However it is very hard to use the first few times, and I found myself loosing the cursor quite a few times. The inclusion of scroll buttons however is a great bonus, and they come-in very useful for web browsing, especially considering the 800x600 resolution.

On the FIC we have the standard “Alps Glidepoint” touchpad, which can be used straight away, and has near perfect sensitivity. It didn’t feel quite as good as those on the high end machines you see in the likes of Dixon´s, it doesn’t have any scroll capability and you cannot tap it to click or double click, it is still good enough for light operation though.

     Anachronox Preview - DailyRadar

Less than two months from now Ion Storm is set to release their highly-anticipated, greatly-enhanced Quake II engine sci-fi RPG, Anachronox. Daily Radar gives us a preview of the game. Here's a quote:
Your personal assistant in Anachronox lives in your cursor. It's a bit odd, but your cursor is a little floating ship that houses what is apparently the dead spirit of your late assistant. Sometimes during a conversation the camera will even switch to her perspective, looking at your huge head through a window in the front of the cursor. Strange.

     Crash Is Going Cubed!
Posted by lthewhite on Monday, April 30, 2001

GameSpot announced today that Universal Interactive Studios is currently developing Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and the next-generation Spyro the Dragon game for the Nintendo GameCube.

As reported previously, the upcoming games are also being developed for the Sony PlayStation 2, the Microsoft Xbox, and the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. This most recent Crash Bandicoot game pits Crash and his sister Cocoa against the evil team of Cortex and Uka Uka. The game's developer, Traveller's Tales, plans to stay true to the traditional Crash gameplay system. Players will have most of Crash's signature moves and several new attacks at their disposal, and as is traditional with previous Crash Bandicoot games, this latest game will have new vehicles, including a jeep and a mech, among others. Little gameplay information is currently known about the next-generation Spyro the Dragon, but it has been confirmed that the game will be in its traditional platformer genre.

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex will be released this November. The next Spyro the Dragon game is currently planned for a spring 2002 release. Universal Interactive could not comment on the status of those games as it relates to the GameCube.

     Dreamcast Games Production Fading Out
Posted by lthewhite on Monday, April 30, 2001

Daily Radar has posted a sad news for the Dreamcast owner today.
We've all known that the Dreamcast would eventually fade out, though it currently sports one of the best libraries of games. It'll be a sad day when Sega finally stops development on any new Dreamcast titles -- and that day will come before March 2002.

Sega of Japan recently announced that it would no longer produce and develop Dreamcast titles after March 2002. However, current owners of the excellent system can still look forward to 65 released in the fiscal year 2001 (the fiscal year extends into March 2002). However, keep in mind that the number reflects global releases -- some of those 65 will be Japanese-only games. Even still, that's one more year of Dreamcast goodness -- enjoy it while you can.

     5 Titles For The GameCube!
Posted by lthewhite on Monday, April 30, 2001

IGN have posted some information out of Acclaim. The site's reports that Acclaim is working on five games for the Gamecube -- Crazy Taxi, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, Extreme G3, NFL Quarterback Club 2002 and All-Star Baseball 2002.

The five games are currently slated for a November 2001 release, although those dates are subject to change. It just so happens that November is the current release date for Nintendo's new console. Acclaim claims that it will not show any Gamecube games at this year's E3 -- likely due to Nintendo's influence. We're happy to see that Sega's hit Crazy Taxi is among the five (Acclaim is currently working on the port to PS2). We hope to have additional details on Acclaim's, and other third parties', Gamecube line at this year's E3 in May. Stay tuned for more news on Mindless Games.

Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

The CPL have received numerous emails requesting that the CPL 4-Year Anniversary Event be delayed by at least one week. The requests have been sent mostly by students in Canada because apparently final examinations take place the same week as the event was originally scheduled. In an attempt to maximize the community's participation in this event, the CPL has moved the event back by one week. The CPL 4-Year Anniversary Event will now be held on Thursday, June 28, 2001 and will end Sunday, July 1, 2001.

The CPL also announced that the main tournament will be a QuakeWorld one-on-one competition, and will have modest cash prizes for the top winners. The CPL has reduced the 4-day admission price of this event to $20, and profits for this event will be donated to a still to be determined, non-religious children's charity. The Hyatt Regency Dallas, has also agreed to reduce their room rate to $90 a night for single or double occupancy. Hotel reservations for this event will open Wednesday at their international toll free number (800) 233-1234.

Most of the activities for this event will be centered around the BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) area which will accommodate up to 800 computers, twice as large as the SPEAKEASY.net BYOC. Also this event will host C3 (Consummate Computer Competition), which will be primarily sponsored by the makers of the CPL's Official Drink: Bawls (www.bawls.com). Computer enthusiasts are invited to showcase their computers at Bawls C3, to be judged on two main categories: 1. Best Showpiece - This category is based on pure aesthetics. The winning system will represent the epitome of raw originality and aggressive looks. The workmanship must be precise and elegant but convey a brawny disposition. Computers will be judged by their looks both inside and out. 2. Best Performance Tuning - This category will be judged based on modifications that have helped fine tune the performance of the system.

Items considered are air flow, active cooling units and passive cool units. Systems will gain extra points in demonstrating cooling benefits with temperature monitoring equipment. The three top winners from each category will receive, courtesy of Bawls: 1st place $500 (plus a case of Bawls) 2nd place $300 3rd place $200 The CPL will announce the prizes and rules for the CPL 4-Year Anniversary Event shortly and online registration is expected to open in a few weeks.

     BleemCast! Announcement
Posted by lthewhite on Monday, April 30, 2001

GameSpot has learned that the first product from bleem! for the Sega Dreamcast will be released initially at Electronics Boutique retail outlets on May 1.

The company's original plans, which were announced at E3 last year, were to release the so-called bleempaks for a suggested retail price of $19.99. However, mounting development costs, a financially draining lawsuit by Sony, and perhaps most importantly, specific technical roadblocks have forced the company to rethink its product release plans.

Bleem! will now release single key discs for specific PlayStation games, and the first bleem! pack for the Dreamcast will be compatible with Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 2. Users will have to boot the bleem! key disc first on the Dreamcast and then swap it with their own copy of Gran Turismo 2 in order to enjoy the game on Sega's console.

The bleem! utility enhances the resolution of PlayStation games from 320x240 to 640x480 on the Dreamcast. It additionally used anti-aliasing and bilinear filtering to further enhance the visual quality of PlayStation games on Sega's 128-bit console. Keep checking minlessgames for more news about it!

     Soldier Of Fortune 2 Announced!
Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

    Finally, our hope's became reality and Raven Software today announced the upcoming release of the sequel to the media-acclaimed Soldier of Fortune. Here's the official press release;

SANTA MONICA, CA – April 17, 2001 – Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Raven Software are going back on active duty with the development of Soldier of Fortune® 2 for the PC. The sequel to one of 2000’s most innovative first person action games, Soldier of Fortune 2 delivers a realistic covert-operative themed gameplay experience with intense action, mind blowing QUAKE III Arena™ powered graphics and a mile-a-minute storyline. Soldier of Fortune is rated MATURE (17 and above) for animated blood and violence by the ESRB. Soldier of Fortune 2 has not yet been rated.

“The original Soldier of Fortune broke new ground with its unrelenting action and gritty portrayal of combat,” said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. “In the sequel we want to extend the experience with more accurate damage modeling, detailed environments and a strong emphasis on realism.”

In Soldier of Fortune 2 players once again assume the role of John Mullins, a military consultant working for the top-secret anti-terrorist group known as The Shop. In the game, players must tackle a wide-range of missions from hostage rescue and intelligence gathering, to search-and-destroy. Level design in Soldier of Fortune 2 is flexible enough to allow for multiple styles of play. Gamers can “hit ‘em hard” with a frontal assault or use stealth weapons for a subtle approach.

Soldier of Fortune 2 brings unparalleled detail to PC gaming with vivid damage modeling and animations, accurate reproductions of actual weapons and missions taken from international hotspots including Prague, Colombia, Hong Kong and Kamchatka. In some cases mission maps or objectives are inspired by the experiences of the actual John Mullins, a former Special Forces officer and military “consultant.”

“John’s assistance has been invaluable in helping shape Soldier of Fortune 2," states Brian Raffel, vice president of Raven Software. "With his input we’ve designed a game that plays as a first person action game, but with a level of authenticity usually only found in military simulations or tactical shooters. “

The backbone of Soldier of Fortune 2 is a highly integrated system of technologies. Environments in the game are created with the QUAKE III Arena engine, widely considered the most advanced 3D engine in gaming. Additionally, Soldier of Fortune 2’s new GHOUL II technology brings the grittiness of combat to the PC like never before with incredibly detailed skeletal animations that enable lifelike character movements and per pixel hit locations for ultra realistic damage modeling. Finally, Soldier of Fortune 2 features an all-new ROAM Terrain System that allows players to ride and fight from armored trucks and helicopters.

Soldier of Fortune 2 will ship with a violence lock that enables players to filter out most of the mature graphics and audio in the game.

     Intel Marketing Tactics Suspected
Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

    According to AVault:

The European Commission is investigating Intel's promotional practices, which the U.S. chip manufacturer defended as “legal and fair.” The Commission said it was investigating direct competitors' complaints that Intel uses its dominance to reward some customers and punish others. The allegation is that Intel conditions the award of advertising grants to PC manufacturers and retailers on an expressed or implied agreement that the recipient would not purchase products from rivals. Intel said there is nothing wrong such rebates when granted at the hand of a corporation that is in a dominant position.

The Commission is investigating terms of the “Intel inside” promotional campaign. A Commission statement said nothing had been proved against Intel and that Intel is co-operating with the investigation. The Commission has requested information related to Intel’s general business practices and the architecture of its microprocessor bus, which carries information between devices within a computer.

     Rails Across America Announced
Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

Strategy First has announced its partnership with Flying Lab Software, in order to publish Rails Across America, a real-time multiplayer strategy game. Rails Across America takes an exciting era of cutthroat competition and crams it into a dynamic two hour multiplayer slugfest," says Russell Williams, Executive Producer, Flying Lab. "We’re thrilled to be working with Strategy First. They’re enthusiastic about the genre and they have a great line of products."

Rails Across America depicts a network of hundreds of tracks with thousands of trains crossing the entire continent. Players focus on strategic decisions, such as where to expand, where to compete, and when to engage in a well-timed price war. Rather than simply operating individual trains, players must build and monitor the rail network, moving cargo from one destination to another. Similar to the “SimCity” model, the level of direct control is limited, but the subtleties that arise are immense, which makes it possible to control large numbers of trains.

While freeing players from managing the "train dispatcher" functions that are common in games such as Railroad Tycoon 2, Rails Across America allows them to focus on higher-level decisions. While many games use money as their sole victory condition, Rails Across America players will compete for ‘prestige’, which is earned by good railroad management and specific goals for different eras. Multifaceted victory points will mean players will be less likely to find economic loopholes by which to dominate the game.

Multiplayer mode allows up to eight players to interact with one another both cooperatively and competitively. They must react to competitive pressures and strike deals with their competitors to play one off against another.

Valve, as part of it's continued support of the online gaming community, has designed its new multicast spectator technology in an effort to give the competitive community what it wants--professional tournament software. Allowing the masses to watch the action in real-time and follow game strategies from a bird's eye view, Valve's Multicast Spectator Mode is unparalleled for tournament coverage. Those present at the SPEAKEASY.net event will be able to preview the client software and be the first to witness the Multicast Spectator features as it is demonstrated in Counter-Strike. Spectators will be able to follow each team's position, strategies, and execution of plays.      New Doom Shown At E3? Not This Year...
Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

A report on Well Rounded Entertainment confirms that id Software's upcoming Doom follow-up will not be on display at this year's E3, nor will it be making any of those stealthy behind closed doors showings either, the report saying the main focus at the show will be on Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the GameBoy Color version of Commander Keen. A subsequent follow-up on GameSpyDaily questions the authority of this statement, but pretty much confirms it nonetheless, as id CEO Todd Hollenshead says: "I don't know where that came from because no one here has the job title of 'spokesman'. Still, I doubt we will show anything from DOOM at E3 this year."

Posted by Za0oO on Monday, April 30, 2001

    Taken straight from Blues News:

The new issue of PC Gamer has hit the stands, and fan page Soldier of Fortune Center has written up all the details from the exclusive preview of Soldier of Fortune 2 it contains. The game will be using the Quake III Arena engine (with a new version of Raven's GHOUL technology), and according to the article it will not ship with multiplayer, although Raven's Brian Raffel has already hinted that this may not be the case (story). Look for a formal
announcement (and hopefully the first screenshots) in the near future.

Yeah baby, can't wait for that announcement!
