Video Games Are Bad For You?
Posted by Fraust on Saturday, August 18, 2001

It doesn't look like this arguement will ever end. A study in Japan has shown poor brain devolopment for kids who were involved in the testing.

Using the most sophisticated technology available, the level of brain activity was measured in hundreds of teenagers playing a Nintendo game and compared to the brain scans of other students doing a simple, repetitive arithmetical exercise. To the surprise of brain-mapping expert Professor Ryuta Kawashima and his team at Tohoku University in Japan, it was found that the computer game only stimulated activity in the parts of the brain associated with vision and movement.
I don't know about you, but I played video games since as far back as I could remember, and I seemed to turn out just fine... I think. This is a rather interesting article to check out, however. Read it at Guardian Unlimited Observer's website and make a conclusion of your own.

 Remember Quest?
Posted by Fraust on Saturday, August 11, 2001

With all the hype about Quake 4 this week, it seems there's another game id Software is working on that hasn't gotten much attention. Linux Games reported that Nerve Software, the guys responsible for the multiplayer in Return To Castle Wolfenstein is also collaborating with id on Quest. You may remember the name from a while back. Graeme Devine came up with the concept before Doom was in the picture. It is a fantasy multiplayer game, like an FPS Diablo. While Quest will probably not be the name of the game when it ships, the concept will probably stay the same. We'll keep you posted on this game as more information becomes available.

 Star Wars: Galaxies Update
Posted by Za0oO on Wednesday, August 1, 2001

The Star Wars Galaxies website has been updated with word that Haden "Shug Ninx" Blackman, LucasArts Producer, has a report from his visit to Austin to check out the status of the massively multiplayer RPG. It mentions the latest versions of Naboo, camera solutions, timeline progression, feature cuts, and more. Here's a blurb:

Possibly the most dramatic new feature to be implemented is the facial customization. I spent about twenty minutes adjusting parameters for a human female face, in the game engine. During that time, I was able to quickly create over a dozen distinct faces by changing the size and shape of the nose, cheeks, chin, brow, eyes, etc. We've been talking about the versatility of this tool, but I was really impressed by it in action. I can imagine myself spending hours making up characters once all of the variables (skin, hair, and eye color; hairstyles; ear shapes, body size and shape) are in place.

 Etherlords Preview - EuroGamer
Posted by Za0oO on Wednesday, August 1, 2001

Today EuroGamer takes an in-depth hands-on look at Etherlords, the impressive looking role-playing strategy game from Evil Islands developers Nival Interactive. Here's a blurb:

The most obvious difference is that in Etherlords this map and the characters which roam over it are all rendered in real-time 3D, using what appears to be a modified version of the excellent home-grown graphics engine used by Evil Islands. It's a colourful, highly detailed and fully animated polygonal world with carts bringing gems to the surface from the mines, buildings puffing out little clouds of smoke and steam, plants swaying in the breeze and eagles flying overhead.

This level of detail also carries over into the battles which take place when one of your heroes meets a monster or an enemy character. The arenas are a mixture of static backdrops with real-time 3D scenery and characters in the foreground, and the animations, spell effects and dramatic camera angles are already looking fairly impressive.
