 Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:18 PM
Category: Strategy

Over on YouGamers they posted up a Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation Review and here is a snip:
Liberation is a standalone expansion, covering the closing battles of World War II on the Western Front. History buffs, take note: there's plenty of background information for each battle (with a comprehensive encyclopaedia of units), and the game strives to maintain historical accuracy (on a greater scale, at least) with regards to campaign progression. Two main campaigns - American and German - are included, and though the scope is reduced from Blitzkrieg 2, there's enough depth to the gameplay to please fans.
Check on the rest of that Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation Review.

Triumph Reunites For Sweden Rock Festival
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:19 PM
Category: Music

I was talking to Phoebus about the Canadian rock band Triumph and I ended up looking on Rik Emmett's site and noticed that after 2 decades the band is getting back together to play the Sweden Rock Festival.
The classic Triumph line-up (Rik Emmett/Mike Levine/Gil Moore) could not have selected a better way to reunite after a two decade absence - with what will undoubtedly be a show-stopping appearance at the 2008 Sweden Rock Festival. Held over a four-day span (June 4-7), the Sweden Rock Festival has been an annual event since 1992, and over the past few years, has been held in Norje, outside of Sölvesborg.
Wow, that sounds damned cool to me, especially when Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Blue Oyster Cult, and Whitesnake will be there as well. You can read more about the band right here on Allmusic (thanks to Phoebus for that link).

 Fallout 3 Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:09 PM
Category: Role Playing

I was just visiting Computer and Video Games and they posted up a Fallout 3 Preview.
The year is 2277, a post-nuclear ravaged earth hangs by the skin of its teeth and as Hellboy's Ron Perlman narrates us into the game's opening: Vault 101. It's here that you awake one morning to find that your father (coolly voiced by Liam Neeson) has defied the Overseer and abandoned the confines of the Vault, rebelling against years of government rule.
Have a look at the complete Fallout 3 Preview.

 Lego Turns 50!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:42 PM
Category: General

Oh hay, Lego Is 50 Years old!!! Happy Birthday Lego! Now would be a good TIME to read this article.
It was at 1:58 p.m. on January 28, 1958, that then-Lego head Godtfred Kirk Christiansen filed a patent for the iconic plastic brick with its stud and hole design. Since then, the company has made a staggering 400 billion Lego elements, or 62 bricks for every person on the planet. And if stacked on top of one another, the pieces would form 10 towers reaching all the way from the Earth to the Moon.
Go read the rest of that article.

 Apevia X-Telstar Junior Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:28 PM
Category: Hardware

Over on bit-tech.net they posted up a review for the Apevia X-Telstar Junior case.
Apevia has been trying to make a name for itself in the budget market lately and as part of that effort it has launched the X-Telstar Junior or, to give it the unnecessarily long full name, the Apevia X-Telstar G-Type Junior (Black). Whatever the name, it’s a steel and plastic chassis for ATX and mATX motherboards which boasts a few nice little features above other cases in the class.
Have a look at the Apevia X-Telstar Junior.

 Satan Is A Game Developer
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:13 PM
Category: General

Oh no, burn all your games, they're evil! Evil I tell ye! I was just on Computer and Video Games and spotted this article which explains that a Journalist for Time thinks games are the work of Satan.
Offloading her parent paranoia and sending gaming forums loopy in the process, Turner proclaims in her thousand word rant that gaming is "crack for kids" and quite simply, "cocaine for the brain".
Here is the link to the original article, right here. Seriously tho, I think she has some good points but that last bit about games being cocaine for the brain / evil creators, etc.... was over the top. heh.

 New Bond Film Title Revealed
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:41 PM
Category: Movies

Apparently the producers have revealed the title of the new James Bond film as "Quantum of Solace".
Producer Michael G. Wilson said the title, chosen only a few days ago, was taken from a story by Bond creator Ian Fleming that appears in the collection "For Your Eyes Only."

Craig said Fleming defined a quantum of solace -- it means, roughly, a measure of comfort -- as "that spark of niceness in a relationship that if you don't have, you might as well give up."
The movie is slated to be released later this year and stars Daniel Craig. You can read more right here.

 FarCry 2 Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:24 PM
Category: First Person

Gamespy posted up a Far Cry 2 Preview and here is a snip:
After a pleasantly surprising appointment to see Far Cry 2 at last year's Leipzig Games Convention, we were excited to head over to Ubisoft's local San Francisco offices to see more. We were impressed with the team's take on open-world gunnery hijinks, and the graphics are looking gorgeous.

 Bethesda Blog On Fallout 3
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:30 PM
Category: Role Playing

The Bethesda Blog over on Club IGN was updated by Todd Howard concerning Fallout 3 and here is a snip:
I'm going to assume that if you're reading this, you've probably read between 1 and 50 previews of Fallout 3 already. There's already too much info out there, in different forms and in conflicting ways, for me to cover or correct it all here. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that the information never gets out 100% correctly, and you will certainly never be quoted correctly. For the record, I never compared the violence in Fallout to Jackass, I compared it to Kill Bill…big difference.
One thing I totally agree with in that portion of text is "There's already too much info out there"...... that is too true and it happens all the time with popular games, unfortunately. Hit the Bethesda Blog and read more.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

 Mass Effect Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:14 AM
Category: Role Playing

Todd Hargosh of Game Industry News took the time to play and write a review for Mass Effect and here is a sample of what he has to say about the XBox title:
Upon receiving a distress signal, they investigate the situation only to find out one of their own, a Spectre (elite military operative) named Saren has gone renegade and sets his plan into action to bring a race that long ago destroyed an entire civilization back into the fold.

The official Star Trek Film site is now online but it's still under construction. Meanwhile over on IGN they posted an article about site launch and the upcoming film.
From director J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Lost and Alias) and screenwriters Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, MI: III) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, Star Trek, featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no man has gone before.

 Alpha Prime Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:06 PM
Category: First Person

Worthplaying put up a Alpha Prime Review and here is a sample of what the reviewer has to say about the FPS game:
Just as I was starting to perfect the art of placing a well-shot bullet into the head of a crazed human, Alpha Prime's security force felt the urge to step in and make my day even worse. The security force is an assembled army of robotic workers that has been given one simple command: destroy all personnel on Alpha Prime. Oh, and if things weren't bad enough, there's still no sign of that new boyfriend.

 Get Into The Vinyl Groove
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:35 PM
Category: Music

According to Time it looks like Vinyl Is Getting Back In The Groove.
Vinyl records, especially the full-length LPs that helped define the golden era of rock in the 1960s and '70s, are suddenly cool again. Some of the new fans are baby boomers nostalgic for their youth. But to the surprise and delight of music executives, increasing numbers of the iPod generation are also purchasing turntables (or dusting off Dad's), buying long-playing vinyl records and giving them a spin.
Sounds good to me XD.

 Project Origin Screenshots
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:28 AM
Category: First Person

I spotted on Worthplaying that they posted 12 screenshots from Project Origin, which continues F.E.A.R.'s supernatural storyline.
The sequel will continue the original game’s spine-tingling supernatural suspense story of an escalating paranormal crisis that threatens to destroy a major American city. At the center of the calamity is the mysterious Alma, whose rage against those who wronged her triggered a chain of events that have spiraled completely out of control. Now that she has free reign, the consequences will be unimaginable.
Have a peek at those screenshots.

What Did Kill Of The Dinosaurs? New Theory!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:58 PM
Category: Science

I was looking at the Time site and noticed they have an article that looks at the possible causes of what happened to the dinosaurs and why they suddenly died off. Obviously well all know the theory of how a comet or asteroid hit the Earth like a fist of an angry god, but what if.... it was actually something smaller.... you know, like Insects!
The dinos died pretty quickly, they admit, but not quite abruptly enough to be explained this way. So alternate theories — the dinosaurs succumbed to allergies, from the rise of flowering plants, or to world-shaking volcanoes in what's now India, or to disease — have always bubbled around the periphery of the conventional wisdom.
It certainly is an interesting theory and you should read more about what those Insects did.... or may have done.

David Jaffe Figures All Consoles Should Merge
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:19 PM
Category: Developer

Next Genertaion posted up an article where David Jaffe is Calling All Consoles to Merge.
Famed God of War designer Jaffe, who previously predicted that a one console future is inevitable, has now wholeheartedly jumped on the train in favor of a standard platform, joining fellow proponents of the school of thought such as Denis Dyack and EA exec Gerhard Florin.
Sounds like an interesting proposal if you ask me but the last console I owned was the Atari 2600...

 Is Painkiller: Overdose Worthplaying?
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:01 AM
Category: First Person

Over on Worthplaying they put up a Painkiller: Overdose Review and here is a chunk of what is said about the game:
This is a (slightly) glorified fan-mod packaged as a whole new Painkiller experience. This alone wouldn't be such a bad thing if the fans in question hadn't botched the process so badly. For example, the weapons, highly touted on the box as "Eight radically designed demonic weapons," are in fact nothing more than the same weapons from Painkiller and Battle Out of Hell, only with new skins and sound effects.
Have a look at the rest of that Painkiller: Overdose Review.

Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:18 AM

My Dad pointed out to me that George MacDonald Fraser passed away at the age of 82, so when I got online this morning I looked for info about the authors death and found an article on the BBC News. He was the author of the Flashman series of novels and he also wrote the screenplay for the Octopussy film.
MacDonald Fraser served as a soldier in Burma and India during World War II and later rose to be deputy editor of the Glasgow Herald newspaper.

Shack News put up an article for what they consider to the best games of 2007 in the Game of the Year Awards 2007.

Over on Gaming Excellence they put up a Fantasy Wars Review so lets take a look at a snip from what Michael Calva has to say about the strategy title:
Whether the story engages its audience or not, the turn-based, hexagonal playing-board style that the game possesses certainly will. Without jumping through too many hoops, Fantasy Wars manages to take a familiar war and breathe some life into it.
