Category: First Person

Computer and Video Games wants to know Where Are They Now? This is an article that takes a look at ten games that didn't appear in 2007 and have gone off the radar.
There are several major games that have dropped off the radar in recent months - no doubt due to the fact that 2007 has seen so many big releases.
Ummm Duke Nukem Forever did make a small appearance... Also Rage! id Software has said nothing since jutst after they announced the name of their latest IP and in recent months theres been no info at all.

 The Witcher Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:58 PM
Category: Role Playing

On AvidGamer they put up a review for The Witcher.
Often, offline RPG’s are accused of lacking depth, but The Witcher trumps most online RPG’s by being based on rich source material. It’s based on a series of novels by the Polish author, Andrzej Sapkowski. Hugely popular in Europe, he’s written a complete series of fantasy books based on a Witcher, Geralt.
Have a look at that review.

 FEAR: Perseus Mandate Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:59 PM
Category: First Person

Over on Computer Games they posted a FEAR: Perseus Mandate Review and here is a snip:
In Perseus Mandate you will take the role of a sergeant from secondary team FEAR team, with the action taking place in parallel to the original story and that of the first add-on. Your team’s objective (although the word team is out of place, considering the fact that you will mainly fight alone) is to investigate the Armacham Corporation and their mysterious project Perseus, as these seem directly linked to Paxton Fattel and Alma.
Go ahead and read that particular FEAR: Perseus Mandate Review.

Universe At War: Earth Assault Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:40 PM
Category: Strategy

It's been ages since I played a RTS game and will probably be awhile before I get psyched to do so again. Meanwhile there's a review for Universe at War: Earth Assault over on Worthplaying and you guessed it.... this is a RTS game.
Although few science fiction RTS series have managed to slake the thirst many veterans have had since Starcraft, titles such as Petroglyph's strategic take on "Star Wars," Empire at War, continued to feed their need to wage intergalactic war. With Universe at War, Petroglyph has taken the lessons learned from pitting Rebel, Imperial and criminal forces against each other by turning Earth into a three-way war of the worlds where humans are merely the buggy paste squished beneath alien jackboots.
So have a look at that. I think I'm still winding down from Christmas day and today was kinda busy as well.... hope you lot had a good time and that everything is going well. Laters!

Well that's it for today. I didn't look for any Christmas gaming news.... whatever. I'm off to celebrate (sleep first)! Have a very Merry Christmas everybody and if you don't celebrate this particular holiday, have a great day just the same! I'm posting this early so I won't have to do it after I get up.... haha. OMFG I think I hear sleigh bells!

Monks, Hillarity & Video Game Sex
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:26 AM
Category: General

Good Morning! It's Christmas Eve!!!!!! OMG where the hell did the rest of December go? I gotta wrap presents later on, bake a cherry pound cake and I'm hoping to jump on Guild Wars and grab a few present drops in Lion's Arch. Last year some grumpy monk told me to f*** off when I went up to a spawn point, so when the next present appeared I speed clicked and grabbed it before he could think and ran off to give it to Scrappy Jihm, while this Monk dude cursed at me like a rabid sailor who dropped his rum overboard and said all sorts of bad stuff. I mean geez, I play a female character and he called me a bitch.... that just pissed me off! LOL! Some people have no sense of Christmas spirit. I wouldn't of taken the present if he hadn't of said anything. heh What a jerk! Ok, lets get to the actual news item. According to Wired Hillary Clinton wants to crack down on video game porn like that nasty mini game in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas where the characters had all their clothes on.... gosh that's sooooo sick..
Hillary Clinton is still outraged that Rockstar Games left a sexually-themed mini game nestled in its best-selling Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2005.
Check out the Hillarity.... crack down. Maybe Hillary should target these nasty Guild Wars monks.... I mean I could've been a little kid he was telling to f*** off. Errrrr anyhow have a great day, be nice to people on and offline and chances are they won't get mad be nice right back to you. Adios and Merry Christmas!

Over on computerworld they posted up an article concerning the plans of a company to demonstrate the ability to store half a terabyte of data on a DVD which is made of material similar to Plexiglas.
Israel-based Mempile Inc. said its TeraDisc DVDs will offer 1TB of storage for consumers in the next few years -- and corporations will be able to use the technology to permanently store data at a fraction of the price of spinning disk and tape, according to Dr. Beth Erez, Mempile's chief marketing officer. Today's high-definition DVDs hold a maximum of 50GB in formats such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Avencast: Rise of the Mage Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:28 AM
Category: Role Playing

Take a look at this Avencast: Rise of the Mage Review that James Fudge put together over on GameShark.
Avencast may not be as flashy as The Witcher or as well written as Neverwinter Nights 2, but there's no denying that it satisfies that action role-playing craving we all get some time.
Check on the rest of that Avencast: Rise of the Mage Review.

Singer and songwriter, Dan Fogelberg has passed away at the age of 56. Somehow I missed the news yesterday and I dug around and found an article on Fox.
NEW YORK — Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.

According to Shack News the sales of Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 are on the low side.
When November industry sales data was released this week by tracking firm NPD, the PC platform was notably absent from the list of top ten best-selling games despite the release of high-profile titles such as Epic Games' Unreal Tournament III and Crytek's Crysis.

According to PLAY, "Lara's adventure takes place after the events of Tomb Raider Legend. Her adventure will be a thrill ride for anyone new to the franchise. The emphasis is on bringing Lara's world to life, a lush, vast interactive world that reacts and remembers. It's pure woman versus wild."

 Painkiller: Overdose Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:27 PM
Category: First Person

Malcolm Owen of Gametatics took the time to write up a Painkiller: Overdose Review.
The game starts you off as “Belial”, someone locked away for multiple millennia due to his powers being useful to some other-worldly being. And from the introductory video, you get the feeling that this guy is angry at being stuck in a cage and left to rot.

 Dungeon Siege Film Trailer
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:35 AM
Category: Movies

Apparently you can now view a trailer for the upcoming Dungeon Siege inspired film (In The Name Of The King) that Uwe Boll is spearheading. The film stars Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, John Rhys-Davies, Kristanna Loken, Bert Reynolds, Ron Perlman and Leelee Sobieski. Anyhow, you can check out the trailer right here on the official site. I viewed the trailer and thought.... this actually doesn't look all that bad. Lets hope that it doesn't suck and we all know how it goes with trailers... meaning that trailers usually contain the best parts or at least the best looking parts and you don't get to see the 'meh' until you see the whole film. Time will tell.

 Unreal Tournament III Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:21 PM
Category: First Person

If you need to know if Unreal Tournament 3 is Worthplaying then have a look at the review they posted.
UT3's single-player campaign tries to play off multiplayer concepts such as spawning, control points and capture the flag in an awkward attempt to make sense out of them as a part of a story. The visuals during cut scenes are very cool, and the immense amount of work that went into developing a game storyline for UT3 is impressive. This makes me wish that I could have seen the single-player campaign as a separate title, though.

 Chris Taylor Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:58 PM
Category: Developer

Computer and Video Games posted an interview with Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games.
Taylor: First of all, I'm very hyper. Always have been, since I was very young. My parents worried about me when I was young - worried whether something was wrong. But I'm also very cerebral. I tend to think deeply about everything - which is why I appreciate your questions where you're searching for a much more complex answer than a number or a quick sentence.

 Beowulf: The Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:31 AM
Category: Role Playing

If you were wondering if the newly released Beowulf: The Game was Worthplaying then you can get a good idea from reading the review.
It doesn't matter if it's a painted pagan whose skeletal frame should split in half from Beowulf's blade, or a hardened Viking warrior. Most foes will usually get back up from a beating unless Beowulf grapples and crushes them to death in the first go, and even then, there are enemies who will shrug that off, too.

 Censorship And You
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:48 AM
Category: General

Good morning! Erin Hoffman of The Escapist put together an interesting article about the whole issue of video games and censorship.
This is a very real quality of life issue. It is a quality of life issue that I exist in a world where my profession is slandered every day in the mainstream media, where parents have to duck their heads out of admitting that they work on games, where we all have to live with the bizarre internal contradiction that Halo is fun and CSI is appalling, but one is the target of attempted censorship and the other is one of the most-watched television shows in America.
Check on the rest of that article.

Canadian Music Pirating Fee On Your ISP Bill
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:49 AM
Category: Entertainment

ars technica posted up an article concerning a proposal by the Songwriters Association of Canada that would see internet users charged a $5 monthly fee directly by their ISPs, which would supposedly cover the cost of people pirating music online.
Based on the observation that the thriving P2P market demonstrates consumers' preference for sharing music instead of paying per-track or per-album, SAC proposes that each Internet-using Canadian citizen be charged a minimal $5 monthly fee directly by their ISPs. This collective monthly license fee would then be split among artists and content owners, generating new revenues and allowing former pirates to sleep better at night now that they can legally trade music for a nominal fee.
Personally I don't know if I like this or not. How is this fair to people who don't download music and they have to pay? Also if anybody else is like me, you'll feel like you paid for something so you might as well download music now and grab whatever you want (that's if the deal was passed). Won't this just make people who download music download more and make more people say, the hell with this I'll download music too? I guess time will tell. If you want to read more you can do so right here.

 Clive Barker Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:06 PM
Category: Developer

If you visit Gamasutra you can read this interview where they chat with Clive Barker about the creative process.
What are your thoughts on your many collaborative partners for Jericho?

The point is, at the end, all I'm concerned with is, "What is the work"? I'm not concerned with the apportionment of blame, or praise, or pats on the head, or a slap on the nuts. I mean, frankly it's, "How good is the work?"

 Unreal Tournament 3 Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:43 AM
Category: First Person

I was looking around and found play.tm posted up a Unreal Tournament 3 Review.
The Warfare mode already looks to be the most popular server type available at the moment and there's no surprise as to why that is. The mode revolves around the concept of two teams each having a base with a power core that the opponent needs to damage and destroy to win. Each power core is linked to a number of nodes in various spots on the map and the team is required to capture each node until they reach the enemy power core.
Go look at the full Unreal Tournament 3 Review.

 Two Worlds: The Temptation Screenshots
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:23 PM
Category: Role Playing

I was lurking around Worthplaying and noticed that they put up some new screenshots from Two Worlds: The Temptation, the first official expansion for the RPG.
The developers are focusing on a blend of the proven and the new: besides several well-known regions of Antaloor, there are also completely new territories to explore. The combat system has been further enhanced too – now you can use active blocking, for example. Many other additional developments have been added – developments which have enabled a completely new means of transport and a much enhanced reaction from NPCs – but more on these and a whole host of other surprises shortly!
So check out Two Worlds: The Temptation. By the way we can expect the add-on to be released sometime during the first half of 2008.

Over on Yahoo! News they reported that daredevil Evel Knievel has died at the age of 69.
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Evel Knievel's hard life killed him — it just took longer than he or anyone else might have expected. The hard-living motorcycle daredevil, whose bone-breaking, rocket-powered jumps and stunts made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.
