 Half-Life 2 Preview on Ign.com
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:53 AM
Category: First Person

On ign.com there's a new Half-Life 2 preview for you guys to check out. Here is a piece of the article:
A team of engineers had begun working on a new engine for the sequel as the first title landed on store shelves. The natural starting point was the list of features that didn't quite make it into the original game. But while they were building a dream engine, now called Source, the engineers were mindful of both streamlining the development process and making it easier for the mod community to change and replace the game content.
Of course they also have a few screenies of the game that goes with the preview so go check on that.

 Croteam Weekly Report Issue 2
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:39 PM
Category: First Person

Croteam went and posted a second weekly update on thier site. Here is a clippage from the update:
Croteam skeptics here now think that Serious Sam 2 looks to be visually at least 'aux par' with other games that will be released around the same time as Serious Sam 2 (Doom 3, Half Life 2 and Halo 2 were mentioned in particular). We'll have to wait and see.
The update goes on to talk about cut-scenes, effects and other stuff so be sure to check it out. It sure is sounding good to me.

 Spam Combat Systems In Development
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:19 PM
Category: General

Spam is a major pain in the rear end. I recently left my online email unattended for 2 days (or something) and ended up with 600++ spam emails. How annoying it is to look through all that crap to make sure nothing legit is gonna go bye bye when mass deleting the garbage. Now I notice on CNN.com this particular combat spam article. Microsoft and Yahoo! Inc. are each developing systems aimed at authenticating senders of e-mail. America Online Inc. is testing a third. It's about time somebody did something about all this spam everybody is being flooded with. Sheeeeesh!

Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:30 AM
Category: Xbox

worthplaying.com posted the news that the release date for Ninja Gaiden was announced. Check out the article for this Xbox action title that will ship on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. Here is a quote:
Boasting 100% action, Ninja Gaiden will allow the player to unleash their inner ninja with smooth game play, speedy battle sequences, and a variety of advanced acrobatic ninja moves from running and flipping off walls to hanging and swinging on rails. The player will also have a variety of primary and secondary weapons at their disposal that when used in a combination, create advanced weapon attacks such as damaging wall-based assaults and all-powerful ultimate attacks.
Well I don't have an Xbox but this game sounds damned cool. I hope it comes out for the PC sometime...

 Star Wars Battlefront Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:05 AM
Category: Action

Gamespot has a cool preview of the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront game that is in development by Pandemic Studios for the PC. Here is a chunk of the preview:
Star Wars Battlefront is, in many ways, a game that's been in development in the minds of kids since the first Star Wars toys hit store shelves in the late 1970s. While playing with the core cast of action figures that represented the main characters from the movies had always been a fun pastime, re-creating the epic battles from the films had been an equally appealing practice (provided one's action figure collection was beefy enough).
This new Star Wars title is classified as an online war-action game but will feature both Single Player and Multiplayer mode. Also have a look at this Planet Guide for more info.

ICQ Users Beware Of Bizex Worm
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:35 PM
Category: General

There is a new worm going around and this time it's after ICQ users. If you use ICQ beware of any messages on ICQ that try to direct you to go to a site called "jokeworld". Here is a piece of the article on this worm:
A computer becomes infected if the user visits a hacker web-site. Invitations to visit this site are being circulated by ICQ. As camouflage, when the web-site is viewed, the user is shown the Joe Cartoon site; Joe Cartoon is the creator of a popular American cartoon series. At the same time, the malicious program attacks the computer on two fronts: firstly, by using a breach in Internet Explorer, and secondly, by using a breach in Windows. The result of this is that a special file is downloaded to the computer, without the user noticing anything; this file downloads the file which contains Bizex and launches it on the victim computer.
Go here to check out the Bizex article on kaspersky.com which is the site of a Russian anti-virus company.

New Preview Of The Bard's Tale
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:26 PM
Category: Action

ign.com has a new four page preview for The Bard's Tale. The following is a cut from the article:
While the original was a party-based game with six members and one conjure slot, the new game will be kind of the inverse. While a few party members will come and go throughout the game, your Bard is the main character, and most of the time his companions will be those that he can summon. There's a wide variety to choose from, including fire elementals, balls of lightning, boulder-chucking giants and, of course, the aforementioned rat.
This new Bard's Tale game has been in development for a year and a half and is over halfway completed.

 Possible Viking Burial Boat Discovery
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:43 PM
Category: Science

I decided to stray from the gaming news for this Viking related story. CNN has this interesting story about a possible Viking burial boat discovery in northeastern England. Here is a piece of the article:
The presence of the nails, specifically designed for use in boat making, along with fragments of two swords and the coins, raised hope that excavation will uncover the remains of the Norse ceremony in which the dead were buried in a boat with their possessions to take with them to the afterlife.
The site of the find itself is being kept secret and was discovered back in December by amateur metal detector enthusiasts. Go here to read more. Reading this viking stuff makes me want to reinstall and play some Rune.

Not only do we get spammed a lot in email, now we can possibly look forward to having a smelly email in the olde inbox?  Legacy Of Kain: Defiance Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:54 PM
Category: Action

Shacknews has a very informative review of Legacy of Kain: Defiance which was posted by jason bergman who is a Shacknews guy. Here is a cut from the review:
Kain and Raziel are separated by hundreds of years for much of the storyline, although they do wind up in many of the same locations. This does limit the variety of the game’s environments significantly, but what’s really a shame is the miniscule number of enemies you’ll go up against. It’s an understandable problem to be sure: Raziel needs both spectral and physical world enemies, plus Kain needs his own set of enemies. The end result is that you’ll encounter the same two or three over and over and over again until you just start ignoring them completely. You do earn experience in the beginning of the game, but once you’ve gotten all five of your special moves there’s no reason to clear out the exact same hallway again unless you absolutely need to.
I myself haven't seen the game on the shelf yet here in Canada but I do plan on getting it eventually. By the way Legacy of Kain: Defiance is out for PC and PS2 if your interested.

 The Bard's Tale Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:15 PM
Category: Role Playing

Once more we have anouther preview to announce. This time gamespy.com has the goods on The Bards Tale which is being developed for both PC and PS2. Here is a piece of the Preview:
In addition to new types of levels and visual enhancements, inXile has gotten rid of lots of annoying trappings found in action-RPGs. As you discover new weapons, you won't have to wait to go back to town to trade them in. If it's worse than your current weapon then you'll automatically get its value in gold. If it's better than your weapon then your old one will be converted to gold and you'll wield your new arm.
The game is built on Snowblind's Dark Alliance engine, most recently seen in Sony Online Entertainment's Champions of Norrath featuring enhancements over the original engine. Well that does sound good don't you think?

 Sacred Preview On 1UP
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:20 PM
Category: Role Playing

1UP.com has an interesting preview of a new RPG/Action game called Sacred which takes elements from Diablo, Dungeon Siege and Baldur's Gate and combines them. Here is a blurb from the preview:
Dealing with Orcs, or anything else in dire need of a swift decapitation, implies knowing how to fight. Not only can we Rohirrim hopefuls mount independent horsies and slay beasts from the back of what we'll pretend is Snowmane, we'll also have to chain ranged, melee, and magical attacks into combos. These different combat arts, when combined via simplistic dragging and dropping, make the slaughter of evil AI characters or evil Internet kids that much more intuitive.
From reading the preview (see blurb above) you'll learn that this game will allow you to ride horses around the Diabloish 2D landscape. That alone makes it sound promising, especially for anbody who's a fan of the Diablo type RPG's.

 Thief: Deadly Shadows Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:17 AM
Category: Stealth

I see that ign.com has a new preview of Thief: Deadly Shadows, which will be the third game in the Thief Series. This informative preview is three pages long and here is a piece of it:
Once again Garrett, a cynical lone wolf and master thief, is drawn back into saving a city and world that he mostly likes to remain detached from. Those veterans of the series will be glad to know that Garrett's personality will remain intact as will his mutterings. Honoring Thief's past legacy is a big part of Ion Storm's aim with this latest installment, and judging from what we saw today, they're doing a pretty good job sticking with the style of art and mood.
This time around you'll be able to play the game in 3rd person and do things like shoot out torches the guards are carrying plus the AI is beefed up so overall this new edition of Thief is certainly sounding really cool.

 Marvel TV Games
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 11:34 AM
Category: Comic Books

GameDaily reports that JAKKS Pacific has entered into a worldwide licensing agreement with Marvel Enterprises that will see it market and distribute TV Games products based on Marvel’s Spider-Man property.
TV Games is an easily portable, self-contained gaming system. All you need are batteries. No videogame consoles and no gaming cartridges required! Simply plug in the A/V output jacks that come with the controller into any standard television set, turn on and play! The lightweight, compact, all-inclusive controller houses a combination of videogames with all of the hardware built-in. This technology allows gaming fans to access a number of videogames with just one single purchase.
See Namco's TV Games for an example. Could this catch on here in the US? Who knows, but expect Spider-Man TV Games by the end of this year to retail for approximately $20.00.
