Slashdot is reporting today that the people over at www.xbox-scene.com and www.xboxhacker.net have managed to run Linux on your XBOX without one of those mod chip thingy majigs. They are booting the Linux Operating System through a bug in the memory save on the EA game 007: Agent Under Fire. You need to have an original copy of the game and a memory card you can attach to your PC to place the proper files on it. Kudos goes out to the people who have figured this way to boot Linux on XBOX. Those who want to try a stab at Linux on your XBOX can now do so without opening your hardware and voiding your warranty.

For anyone looking foward to Blizzard's upcoming third person shooter Starcraft: Ghost, you'll be wise to head on over to IGN Xbox tomorrow night and check out their special coverage of the game. Apparently they have seen the game and will be ready to tell us all about it Sunday night. Sounds interesting? I thought so. They did say it's like mixing Splinter Cell and Metroid together. That sounds even more interesting. Will Sunday night ever come?

New Rock favorites Staind are ready to unleash their fourth album 14 Shades Of Grey on May 20th and you can get your very first listen of the new album. Bandbuilder has a preview snippit of the song Price To Play. It sounds like the heavier material from their last album Break The Cycle, but not quite as heavy as Dysfunction. Staind fans should definitely check it out, but since it's only a preview clip keep in mind that it's hard to judge the song by.

Ubi Soft sends word that they've changed a few release dates on the Splinter Cell front. Re-mark your calenders because April 8th will now be the release date for Splinter Cell on the Playstation 2 and Gamecube. Previously the date for the Gamecube version was later than this. They have also announced that the Game Boy Advance version will be released on April 24th. I'm sure this will make a lot of people happy. Gee, don't games usually get bumped back? It's not too common for this "early release" phenomena to happen. We should be grateful.

Bruce Banner is a cool guy. I wish I could just turn into a green monster and beat the snot out of people when I get mad. I'm sure the rest of you wish that as well. I was overjoyed to find out that we will get the chance with an upcoming game about The Hulk to go along with the upcoming movie. The folks over at Worthplaying.com have a few new screenshots of the game in action. We'll be able to beat up things as The Hulk on our PC, Playstation 2, Gamecube, and Xbox platforms soon. From the looks of the game, it seems to be unrelated to the movie's concept (unlike last year's Spider-man game which mirrored the movie in many ways) and is taking more of an approach to the comic book series.

Classic gamers from around the east coast will be flocking to the Valley Forge Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this weekend. The Philly Classic will be kicking off for the fourth time on Saturday morning (Friday night for pre-registers) for a weekend full of interviews, fun and game trading. Such great events as game contests, full arcade cabinets set to free play, and classic game programmers will be giving speeches throughout the day. Also Atari Age will be releasing 6 new Atari 2600 games at the event. You can see a lineup of the releases here.
Sadly I will not be able to attend the Philly Classic this year but I will be attending the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada in mid-August. But if you're in driving distance of Philadelphia and have the weekend free take a drive on up.

Gamecube Outsells PS2 In UK

It's true. In the United Kingdom, Nintendo's Gamecube has outsold Sony's Playstation 2 last week thanks to recent price cuts and the release of Metroid Prime. The Gamecube rose in sales by over 60 percent while the other consoles (including the Game Boy Advance) went down in sales by 10 to 15 percent. Nintendo has been gaining a lot of ground since late last year. I am sure we will see a large spike in US Gamecube sales in the next few weeks with the release of The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Whether it tops the Playstation 2 in sales I'm not sure. It probably will vault over the Xbox sales, but only time will tell that for sure.

Watch out Las Vegas, now us gamers can wager our hard earned money on online gaming. A company called YouPlayGames have developed a business model and software that allows gamers to put their money where there skills are. The first game supported is Return to Castle Wolfenstein with more games being added in time. You can see the press release here.
Gamers in the United States better double check and see if online gaming wagers are legal in your state.(CNN) U.S. players in Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, Tennessee and Vermont won't be able to wager any money because of laws barring fee-based online gaming. I can only wonder how many people will play on this kind of service. I know I'd lose too much money!
War Games Are Selling Due To Operation: Iraqi Freedom

It looks like gamers are influenced by the war enough that games based on military combat are getting a sales boost. I had a feeling these games would get some sort of boost, but I didn't think we'd hear about a sales spike this soon. Games that have seen a spike in sales include Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, Battlefield 1942 and Conflict Desert Storm.(CNN) The game received generally poor reviews, but still sold pretty well, moving roughly 300,000 copies for the PlayStation 2 and another 150,000-200,000 for the Xbox. Still, under normal circumstances, "Conflict Desert Storm" likely would have seen a price cut by this point. A sweep of software stores in the New York area, however, showed the game was still carrying a price of about $50. Several locations were sold out. The free mod Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942 takes the cake though. The interest in this mod was large before, but now it's through the roof. Publishers are asking the mod developers about selling the game. Of course, the America's Army: Operations has been in the spotlight as well. While the game is designed by the Army themselves, they say there will not be any missions revolving around this war. It will be interesting to see how long this sales surge will last. I don't think it will be too long, but even I was considering adding a new war game to my collection. Too bad I don't have any money.

For those of you living under a rock this week let me wake you up with a little bit of news. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker has been officially released today. I picked up my copy before I went to work so I wouldn’t end up playing it before work and suddenly calling in ‘sick.’ The reviews for this game are all very positive and you can check them out here, here, here, here, and lastly here.
When I was at my local video game store I watched 4 people in front of me buy a copy of Zelda and a new GameCube. I wonder how much it boosted the Cube's sales? I can’t wait to get out of work tonight to get started on my quest.

"G'Day mate! Up for a game of ball... my way?" Ok that was lame, I apologize. But really, there is talk about Acclaim bringing their Australian Rules Football League game AFL Live 2004 to the United States. There is a survey on Acclaim's site asking if there would be interest in a game like this stateside. If you have no idea how the Aussie's play football (I sure don't) you can check out the official game site here. Personally, I think it would be cool if they brought this game to the US. I'm always up for some variations in sports games. In fact, I still love to fire up a game of Deathrow. The chance to play something different is refreshing, so I say, bring is over here Acclaim, I'd play it.

Check out the new screenshots of the game at IGN in the media section. The folks over at The Adrenaline Vault have posted their first impressions of the Game Boy Advance SP, Nintendo's newest version of the small handheld. Is it worth an upgrade from the old version? The screen itself is the same size as the normal GBA - and the quality is exactly the same. The front-lit feature isn't perfect - but it's a godsend if there's very little light or you can't find the right position for gameplay. You have to fiddle with the tilting screen to get the best position - but it's golden when you finally do. The sound on the SP is the only problem. The volume adjuster is now a slide-bar instead of the wheel - which makes fine-tuning hard - and the audio also isn't as clear as it should be. The rest of the impression can be read here. Have you purchased your Game Boy Advance SP yet? Have you been able to find one in stores? Let us know.

American McGee's Alice has been praised for many reasons, but one of the most unique parts of the game was the soundtrack crafted by Chris Vrenna. If you enjoyed the music in this game you will want to listen up because I've got some great news. Chris Vrenna is going to remix one of the songs from the soundtrack and release it on the special edition 7" vinyl for Enter The Matrix. Which song is it? Well, this is where it gets better. The song is determined by you! You can vote for the song that will be remixed by going to the poll on Tweaker.net. Have fun, and hopefully your vote will be the winning song.

Finally, after years of waiting, the Syphon Filter series comes to the Playstation 2 with Syphon Filter Omega Strain. The game is being developed by Sony Bend and will be released this fall. Omega Strain will apparently be the final game in the series and will feature single player and multiplayer online modes. The game features a new create-a-player mode and will be the only game in the series that does not use Gabe Logan as the main character. While the single player mode is full functioned, the multiplayer mode is where you can fully take advantage of the game.(IGN) Sony Bend's online technology is very flexibly, using peer-to-peer technology, which is not reliant on a server base like SOCOM: Navy Seals. The developer wants to encourage the online aspects of team play, which change the game. For instance, if you reach a blown up stairwell in single-player mode you cannot get past it. But with a teammate, you can assist the other up past it. The second player can then grab the above ledge, climb up it, and then reach his or her hand down to pull up the other player. This could be the next big killer app on the PS2's online roster. We will keep you posted about new information as soon as we get it in.

Nintendo's game library continues to grow with three important Gamecube titles given release dates. The upcoming Mario Golf is coming to the US on July 28th 2003. While this game was announced last year, little information has been given since, but it seems to be on track since it has a confirmed release date. Also, while these dates have already been announced, Nintendo has reconfirmed that F-Zero will be available on August 25th and Wario's World on June 23rd. I've been drooling over F-Zero since screens first surfaced, so I'll need to get a Gamecube by then. Looking at the moth that just flew out of my wallet, I'm going to have to save up.

Nintendo's soon to be released mega-hit The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker is already getting some reviews popping up online. Gamespot has posted their review of the game, giving it a 9.3 out of 10.While The Wind Waker does have its own twists and turns--much of the gameplay involves you sailing around the world in a talking boat known as the King of Red Lions, for example--the gameplay is very similar to that of The Ocarina of Time. The control scheme is nearly identical, using the GameCube controller's L trigger for lock-on targeting and the Z, X, and Y buttons for any inventory items you choose to assign there. The combat is also very similar, though there is a new counter move that lets you easily sidestep or leap over incoming attacks and strike at a foe's back. The combat in The Ocarina of Time worked really well, so it's no surprise that the combat in The Wind Waker also works very well. The game doesn't hit stores for a few more days, but don't be surprised to see reviews begin popping up until release. By early reports, I don't think we'll see any disappointing reviews, so if you have any preorders on the game you won't be disappointed.

I read this over at Evil Avatar and it was submitted to us by frequent reader Hades so I figured I'd give it a mention. A member of Ohio's 5694th National Guard Unit in Mansfield has legally changed his name to Optimus Prime. He is on his way to the Middle East to help defend airfields. "I got a letter from a general at the Pentagon when the name change went through and he says it was great to have the employ of the commander of the Autobots in the National Guard." Optimus Prime in the military is extremely cool, and the fact that a general had the sense of humor to comment on it makes it even better. Victory is assured when you know the Autobots are giving aid. I figured we could all get a kick out of this news.
Playstation 3 In 2006?

For anyone waiting until the next generation to get a game console, you'll be waiting quite a while. According to this CNN article the Playstation 3 from Sony may not appear until 2006. Developers have not seen development kits for the new system yet, and the Playstation 2 is doing so good on the market, that the need to put out a new console isn't nessessary. In fact, the PS2 has only had one price drop and is still at the $200 price tag after over two and a half years of release. Microsoft still plans to take the advantage by releasing a console earlier, but how much earlier is unknown. Despite the gigantic lead Sony has, any of the console makers can come out on top next round, dependant on many factors, and timing is certainly one of them.
Also in this article is a hinting that the PS2 may see a price drop to $179 in the near future. A $149 price tag was expected, but it looks like that may not be the case, it's too soon to tell. I have a feeling that the answers to all of this will come up at E3.

Ok ok, all jokes aside, it is true. Former Vice President Al Gore is now on the board of directors at Apple Computer when he was elected earlier today.“Al brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and wisdom to Apple from having helped run the largest organization in the world—the United States government—as a Congressman, Senator and our 45th Vice President. Al is also an avid Mac user and does his own video editing in Final Cut Pro,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Al is going to be a terrific Director and we’re excited and honored that he has chosen Apple as his first private sector board to serve on.” Al Gore is certainly a busy man these days, as he is also a senior advisor at Google and a visiting professor at several colleges across the country. I wonder how this ever came to be, and why? Publicity? That remains to be seen. It should be interesting to see how Al's influence will affect the company.

If you were living under a rock the last few hours, this is the first time you are hearing this, but you can be sure it won't be the last. It is now after 8PM EST and Saddam Hussein's deadline to leave Iraq is up. The coalition is now ready for war. As of this writing, troops are on the borders of Iraq, and the battle can begin at any moment. Things are sure to be crazy in the coming days, weeks, months, possibly longer. I don't know the ages of our readers, but some of you may be too young to be familiar with a full scale war. Things will be changing continuously, but I think it's best that we all continue to live our lives as normal, just keeping your eyes and ears open for news about the goings on of the war.
We here at Mindless Games have been following the road to war for months now, and feel it is important to talk about these important world issues as they affect us all. Don't worry, we aren't turning into a "War Coverage Site", we're still primarily dedicated to games and entertainment. We hope you will keep yourselves informed about the world's affairs during these times (we will surely be posting important news about the war from time to time), but whenever you need a break from it all and want to know about your favorite games, you know we are always here.
On a final note, I wonder if video games will find a boost of sales because of this conflict. Rainbow Six 3 just came out yesterday and there's a whole slew of games on the shelves already that are geared around military conflict. Will this war mood spark some extra sales in these games? I think they will, but it will be interesting to see if they do for sure. What do you think? Let us know by dropping an email.
Computer Games That Suck

AVault has an excellent new article about poor-quality computer games, why people buy them, and how they are affecting the games industry. While there's no doubt the industry is booming, could things be better if there were less of these "sub-par" games?Game reviewers usually have sufficient arrogance to assume that the titles most people will want to buy will be those we praise the most in our critical assessments. Yet the actual pattern is quite different, with many sub-par titles selling like hotcakes and some wonderful releases ending up startlingly unpopular. Because this seems to make absolutely no sense on the surface, it's worthwhile to investigate how big the praise-purchase gap is, its root causes, the kinds of consequences it generates, and whether it's possible or even desirable to reduce the gap. You can read the rest of the article here and see why this problem needs to be remedied. Remember kids, don't buy shoddy games, spend your hard earned allowance on good games. Might I suggest Splinter Cell?

Final Fantasy X was a big game on the Playstation 2 and the upcoming sequel (Final Fantasy X-2) is not far off in the US. Believe it or not, there may be another sequel to this game according to UK trade journal Indie Magazine. Square is so pleased with sales of Final Fantasy X-2 that they apparently are planning to create another sequel to Final Fantasy X. Tentitively titled Final Fantasy X-3, the game probably won't ship in Japan until at least next year, so it will be quite a wait if this game really is coming. Until then, you can enjoy Final Fantasy X-2 when it is released in the US.

I'm back! I've finally returned from my (rather expensive) sojourn to California. My timing wasn't the best, to put it lightly, what with the economic situation the way it is -- the price of gas in CA is well over $2./gal. (reg. unleaded)! Nevertheless, I'm glad I went, and I ended up attending GDC after all, where I met lots of people and of course collected much schwag. I love California and hope to return soon, God willing. But I'm thankful to be back and very glad to finally rejoin my good friends Fraust, Dark Friend, DraX, Grimlock, Face.UK and Doom Dude (I missed you guys!), and to rededicate myself to you, dear Mindless Games readers!Have a great day, and expect more news from our own unique perspective!

Soldier Of Fortune II has been a big hit on the PC and when it was announced for Xbox with full Xbox Live support, people took notice. IGN has posted a new preview of the port. It looks promising, but my biggest concern is how the multiplayer is. Here's what they had to sayUp to ten players can play on a Live or System Link match, but there can be only two teams for each mode (except Deathmatch, which is every person for themselves). Voice communication will include a walkie talkie feature, which allows players in close proximity to hear what someone is saying and those being spoken to over the comm system can hear everything. This is sort of a combination of Phantasy Star Online's voice communication and Unreal Championship's team-specific comm line. That sounds like a great use for the communicator. The rest of the game looks just as impressive. Head on over to IGN and read the rest of the preview.

It is a day of big releases for Ubi Soft, who continue to pump out game after game with success. Starting today you can find Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield on store shelves for your PC. The game follows in the grand tradition of the Rainbow Six series and is sure to be a big hit."With massive pre-release excitement and the incredible success of the Clancy franchise, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 promises to be another huge hit and is expected to fly off store shelves," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing for Ubi Soft Entertainment. "Rainbow Six fans demand sophisticated, intense gameplay with the white-knuckle realism of Tom Clancy - they won't be disappointed." By the sounds of this game when it was in the works, it should be a solid game to add to the collection. And hey, it's using the Unreal engine, so you know it's going to look gorgeous.

From pulse-pounding gameplay and insane combat to A-list voices and music, Rayman 3 delivers the fun that made Rayman famous, and takes him in a new direction," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing for Ubi Soft Entertainment. Naughty Dog's hit Jak And Daxter is quite possibly the best platformer on the Playstation 2, so it's no surprise that a sequel is in the works. Entitled Jak II, the game will push the black console to new heights with graphics and gameplay.Featuring advanced technology and characters both familiar and new, Jak II is a true plot-driven adventure game, where every mission has a direct effect on the storyline. With stunning graphics and animations, Jak II takes gamers on a journey through an enormous mystical world, darker than they have experienced before, as an immersive tale unfolds.
"Jak II will deliver a whole new cinematic gaming experience to players," adds Andy Gavin, co-founder of Naughty Dog, Inc. "Intriguing adventures, perilous exploration, shocking discoveries and over one hour of gorgeous cinematic animations, help drive the story along through twists and turns until the final climax." IGN is reporting that someone from Rockstar has registered the domain www.gtasanandreas.com. It has been rumored that the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series will in fact take place in San Andreas, but I wonder if Rockstar is doing this just to throw people off. I've never been to San Andreas so I don't know if there is any rivers or lakes, but if there is, hopefully our main character will not die when he steps in water. When we get more concrete information, we will post more because I know you are drooling for more GTA right now.

These girls aren't so innocent anymore. Although Maines has apologized, they still are banned from several radio stations and continue to recieve a lot of flack for the statement. I think these celebrities need to shut their mouths about politics. No one seems to know what they are talking about.

We haven't done any entertainment related news in a while, so I figured I'd get you some new dirt from the music world. Jason Newsted, bass player for the band Voivod, is the new bass player for Ozzy Osbourne's band. He will still do Voivod, so don't worry about him leaving that band. Ozzy intends to have a special event in Hollywood on Monday to announce Jason as the new bass player. Interestingly enough, Jason left Metallica a few years ago and is now with Ozzy. Meanwhile, Rob Trujillo left Ozzy recently and is now in Metallica. They just swapped jobs more or less. Both bands should benefit greatly from these recent events and I'm sure none of us will be disappointed.

I'm sure this widened a few eyes. The Gran Turismo series, which is loved by millions on the Playstation consoles, has another game in the works. Polyphony Digital's president Kazunori Yamauchi released some details about the upcoming game. An IGN article tells of a focus to add even more to the simulation experience. Improved physics are also being looked at, as well as the car's interaction with the track. Body damage is being looked into, as Polyphony has wanted to implement this feature before, but there have been issues with car manufacturers over this. Whether or not body damage to the cars will actually make it into the game is unclear (and from the sounds of it, unlikely). However, there is a possibility of online play, which seems to be a logical step. We'll update you on more of this game as we get it.

That's right. Final Fantasy X-2 shipped 1.8 million copies in Japan. I think it's safe to say that the game is expected to be a success? According to Gamespot, Square's preliminary goal is to sell two million copies, but it has not been announced how many they plan to sell in the long term. Look for the game to be available worldwide before years end. Despite how well this game does, it does not look like we will see another FFX game, but I wouldn't count out sequels to future Final Fantasy games (I know that sounds weird, but it makes sense, really).

Anyone with a home theater that utilizes DTS for their surround sound will be treated to more support for the surround sound platform in the future. According to IGN, Digital Theater Systems will be giving game developers the opportunity to add DTS support to their games at no charge. Any developer whos software is "DTS certified" by April 1st, 2004 will not have to pay any fees. This turns out good for both ends as the developers can work with this support and not worry about the fees behind it, and we get more DTS compatible games. I know EA has used DTS in the past and will continue to, this new announcement will likely bring even more developers and publishers to produce DTS games.

You can find a Playstation 2 Network Adapater in my area pretty easily, but apparently that is not so in many parts of the country. If you are having a hard time getting your sweaty palms around a Network Adapter, don't dispair, because Sony is doubling its shipments. The company intends to sell one million total units by the end of March as they've already sold over 500,000 units thus far. Xbox Live looks like it has some real competition going on now. The fact that the PS2 has support for dialup users means Sony probably has a little bit of an advantage by default.

It's an excellent example of what Xbox Live gamers expect from many of the hottest games on Xbox." I haven't gotten the chance to play this much yet, but it looks great so far. The download process is smooth as butter. This extra content feature of Xbox Live alone is worth the price of admission. Grab Kola Cell today and get all stealthy, you know you want to.

Sony has announced the release of their newest Playstation 2 exclusive title, My Street. The game was crafted by the people at Idol Minds and allows for offline as well as online play. Interested?Players can either use pre-determined characters or create their own game "persona," selecting everything from wild hairstyles to outrageous outfits, and then hit the street where a group of energetic children are eagerly awaiting challengers for seven unique mini-game contests. In both on- and offline gameplay, players of all ages can take on up to three of their friends in a mix of some old schoolyard favorites and fresh new mini-games including Dodgeball, Volleyball, RC Racing, Marbles, Chemistry, Lawn Mowers and Chicken Herding. Whether playing friends in their living room or text-chatting and competing online through a broadband or dial-up connection via the Network Adaptor (Ethernet/modem) (for PlayStation®2), members of the whole family can compete to see who really rules the virtual neighborhood and be crowned king of the playground. This sounds like it would be rather addicting if you had a good group of friends to play online with. The Playstation 2 is definitely in need of some more solid online games, and this might be just what the doctor ordered.

Nintendo has announced that over 500,000 gamers have pre-ordered the upcoming Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. This game has pre sold more copies than any game in Electronics Boutique's history. Yes folks, even more than Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."Given the history of the Zelda series, we expected overwhelming interest, and this solidifies the ever-growing phenomenon and attraction gamers have to the characters and story," explained George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America. "It doesn't matter which system you own, gamers across the world respect and anticipate the launch of any Zelda game and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a killer application that will move hardware." This is great news for Nintendo, who is sure to push a lot of hardware in the next few months. I'm sure a lot of these pre-sells can be rooted back to the fact that the N64 game was given away as a freebie. None the less, this release will be huge, and I'll be sure to stay away from my local game shops that day to avoid the mobs.

Hello again everyone and welcome to Night Surfing. I have another themed edition of my critically acclaimed site highlighting, uh, thing. Tonight's edition is themed around RPGs and MUDs. Not sure what a MUD is? Think Everquest, but without the graphics.- NetRPG
This is a website that is dedicated to RPGs online. A lot of things you will find here are dice rollers for games like Dungeons & Dragons, map makers, character sheets, things of that sort. This is handy if you are playing or plan to play in a game of D&D over a chat room. This is actually a very fun way to play. I've done it before, and also used some of the tools listed on this site. If you prefer a more open world where you can play with or against people whom you've never even met, maybe my next site is more up your alley.
- Realms Of Kaos
This is what you would call a Multi User Dungeon. A MUD. Get it now? It's not very graphical like MMORPGs are, but this is the same idea. You create a character and toss him into this vast universe where you can interact with other people or do some dungeon slaying. The world truly is open to you. The game has it's own client which does actually have some graphics, but the game is still mostly text driven. It's free to play, so go check out this game and maybe you'll be hooked on one of the oldest gaming genres on the net. That will do it for tonight. Take care and safe surfing. If you have any sites to share, send them to us and we'll post them.

Unreal Tournament 2003 has been one of the hottest games since it's release last year. How do you keep the appeal hot as it was when it first hit the shelves? With bonus packs of course! The second bonus pack has been released with new maps, new features, and new gameplay types. The coolest sounding gameplay type is "Mutant". Here's the description:The player who makes the first frag becomes the mutant and is immediately equipped with all weapons, extra ammo, invisibility, agility and berserk. However, the mutant's health slowly decreases and can only be replenished by fragging other players. Once there is a "mutant," all other players are charged with hunting him down. Points are scored only by the mutant when they frag other players. As an optional twist, the player with the lowest score becomes the BottomFeeder -- he can frag other players who are not the mutant and receive points. As soon as his score isn't the lowest, a new player becomes the BottomFeeder. Head on over to the official website to get your game updated for more action online.
