PNY XLR8 8800 GTS 320MB Video Card Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:01 PM
Category: Hardware

I was looking at various video cards for a new gaming rig and was checking out some of the newfangled Geforce 8800's and the PNY GeForce 8800 GTS caught my eye yesterday, although I probably will buy something that isn't DX 10 right now. So anyways, today I spotted a review for the PNY XLR8 8800 GTS 320MB Graphics Card over on I4U News.
To date I have reviewed 8800 GTS 320MB graphics cards from XFX, BFG, and Foxconn. The important difference between the other cards I have reviewed and the PNY 8800 GTS 320MB graphics card I am looking at today is that all three of the earlier reviews featured cards that were overclocked from the factory whereas the PNY card is using stock clocks. The clock speeds for the PNY 8800 GTS 320MB are 500MHz on the core, 1.6GHz on the memory and 1200MHz on the shader clock.
If you happen to be in need of a new video card, maybe the PNY XLR8 8800 GTS 320MB Graphics Card is the one.

There is a Tomb Raider: Anniversary Preview over on IGN and here is a bit of what Matt Wales has to say about it:
Thankfully, Crystal Dynamics seems to be on track with Lara's new outing, wafting its customary design magic all over the place a second time around. At least, that's the impression we got when we had chance to sit down with Eidos and explore the previously unseen, completely reworked Egyptian level - dragged kicking and screaming into 2007, replete with angry mummy cats and great big dinosaurs.

Guild Wars 2 And Expansion Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:51 PM
Category: Massively Multiplayer

About.com posted up an interview with AreaNet co-founders Jeff Strain and Mike O'Brien about Guild Wars 2 and the upcoming Eye Of The North expansion. Here is a clip:
Jeff: We haven't actually announced what the follow-up plan is for Guild Wars. This is the first Guild Wars expansion but we certainly haven't said that this is the end of Guild Wars 1. Regardless of our product release strategy, it goes without saying that even after Guild Wars 2 ships we have no intention of shutting down servers or ending support for Guild Wars 1. At this point we just don't know if there will be Guild Wars 1 releases after Eye of the North... we're not closing our doors to the idea, but we can't say anything definite about it one way or the other.

 25 Most Awesome Game Covers?
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:48 PM
Category: General

Over on IGN they posted up what they consider to be the Top 25 Most Awesome Game Covers.
Box art has long been one of the surest ways to market a game. A great cover can illicit a purchase even from a knowledgeable gamer. Cover art has evolved over the years and so there aren't nearly as many choices from modern games.
That is all on IGN.

HIS X1950Pro IceQ 3 Turbo Review

Hexus posted up a review for the HIS X1950Pro IceQ 3 Turbo video card.
As we've come to expect, HIS has done away with the reference cooler and added its third-generation IceQ 3 heatpipe cooler instead. The IceQ coolers are usually very quiet, and this third version of the HSF is no different. It remained quiet and offered good cooling through all of our tests.

 Chip Cooling Breakthrough
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:36 PM

According to this article IBM researchers have revealed details of a chip cooling breakthrough.
The technique, developed by a team of scientists at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in co-operation with Momentive Performance Materials, formerly GE Advanced Materials, overcomes a barrier in chip cooling by improving the application of the "glue" that binds chips to their cooling systems. The new technology could allow for faster computer chips to be cooled more efficiently.

The Shivering Isles features a bizarre landscape split between the two sides – Mania and Dementia – filled with vast, twisting dungeons mirroring the roots of the trees they are buried within. You'll encounter more than a dozen new creatures including hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibious Grummites. Throughout your adventure, you will discover all new items, ingredients, spells, and more, and have the talented craftsmen of Crucible and Bliss forge new armor and weapons just for you.

Guild Wars Chapters Scrapped, Expansion Announced and Guild Wars 2 Revealed (PC)

Here is some big news if you happen to be a player of Guild Wars.. Apparently the word on the street is that ArenaNet has decided to scrap future chapters and will release a expansion that requires players to own at least one of the three available chapters (remember that the previous chapters were stand alone products). The expansion will be called Eye of the North, is planned as a holiday 2007 release and will feature content that bridges the storylines in Guild Wars and..... are you listening?.... keep your eye on the ball, son... and the planned Guild Wars 2!!! Much more info can be viewed in this Guild Wars Guru Forums thread, which was captured from a recent copy of PC Gamer (May 2007 Issue #161) and if you grab the magazine you can find out even more stuff about what is going on with the series.  S.T.A.L.K.E.R. R.E.V.I.E.W. (PC)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:34 PM
Category: First Person

Boomtown posted up a review for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and here is a peek:
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a First Person Shooter with big open areas divided into a range of zones. Take Oblivion and change the background and you have a pretty good idea of how it works. You are free to go anywhere you please, but certain areas are closed until you are ready to get closer. Each zone consists of rather large areas inhabited by humans and animals, all living their own life. You often bump into people moving from zone to zone, and armed conflict between the different factions is not uncommon.
So go read the rest of that review for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Titan Quest: Immortal Throne Review (PC)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:22 PM
Category: Role Playing

IGN put up a Titan Quest: Immortal Throne Review and here is a snip:
One of the coolest new additions is the new Dream mastery skill set. This is a very versatile set of skills that permits players to dish out lots of damage to groups of enemies. The Psionic attack is a great boost to your basic weapon attacks and the Distortion power is an awesome ranged attack that can hit multiple enemies at once. Teleportation powers add lots of mobility options and a range of new trance effects act as running buffs that can hurt your enemies and heal you.

 Two Worlds Preview (XBox 360/PC)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:56 AM
Category: Role Playing

If you wander over to Worthplaying you can take a look at the Two Worlds preview they have posted.
Two Worlds is the very epitome of the Western approach to RPGs, featuring a skill-based character development system that lets players customize their character in a way that reflects their own personal approach in the game. Single-player characters tend to be human warrior types due to the story constraints of the campaign. The single-player mode calls for the player to be a human mercenary searching for a sister who disappeared in a mysterious attack, but that is, of course, just part of a much larger and more epic struggle.
Take a look at that Two Worlds preview.

 OMG! Captain Marvel!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:20 PM
Category: Movies

Apparently (if you hit this Daily News, Rush and Molloy page) theres some stuff about an upcoming Captain Marvel movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal may soon collect an awfully big paycheck as America's latest superhero. We hear New Line execs are keen to have the "Brokeback Mountain" hunk play Captain Marvel in "Shazam!" Based on the DC comic, the movie is New Line's bid for a franchise on the order of "Batman" and "Superman." "They're ready to spend up to $200 million to get it started," an insider tells us. Sources say director Peter Segal and his fellow producers want to nab Gyllenhaal before "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi does - with "Spider-Man 3" due to open on May 4, star Tobey Maguire has said he may let someone else play the web slinger.
So there you have it... Thanks to Phoebus for sending me the info.

 Clive Barker's Jericho Preview (PC)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:46 PM
Category: First Person

Over on Computer and Video Games they have a preview for Clive Barker's Jericho and here is a mangled rip from the article's corpse:
The concept of Jericho came from Barker himself, whose dark thinkings were snapped up by Codemasters, who in turn happened to know that the technology Mercury Steam were tinkering with was running deep with blood. Specifically particle-based blood that can gush out of exposed wounds, or dissipate in clouds of red in high-intensity collisions. The engine's speciality in shiny body goo, murky lighting, life-like environment textures and overtly stylised, yet still somewhat real creatures, fit the bill precisely.
This all makes me want to replay Clive Barker's Undying.... now that was a cool game. Hopefully Jericho will be at least as good as Undying.

 NZXT Zero Computer Case Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:44 AM
Category: Hardware

I was looking at new hardware to see what's out there and I plan to put together a new gaming box, sometime in the next couple months. Unless I see a better case I'll probably go for this one from NZXT. This morning I spotted on DarkVision Hardware a review for a different NZXT case, which is the NZXT Zero.
The NZXT Zero is part of the company's Crafted Series and is a full-tower aluminum case. One of the things that sets this case apart from most other cases is the huge amount of air cooling - this case comes preloaded with seven 120mm fans and one 80mm fan! This is pretty impressive as most cases only have about two or maybe three fans. But won't the almost ridiculous amount of fans make the case really loud? According to NZXT the case features quite cooling but that's something we'll obviously have to check while reviewing this case.
After reading that review I think I'll stick with the NZXT Black Apollo, but I'm in no hurry and will look around more. Check out the NZXT Zero.

Category: Role Playing

Over on PC Gamer they posted up a preview for the upcoming Shivering Isle expansion that is being developed for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Here is a peek at what they're saying about it:
It's the first proper expansion to Oblivion, and Bethesda are quoting "30 hours" of game. Even after converting from Bethesda Time to Actual Time that's still a succulent 18 hours or thereabouts. Even more succulent given the chosen subject matter: madness.

 Karous Revealed and Released (DC)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:21 PM
Category: Sega Dreamcast

Apparently a new commercial Dreamcast game has been released that goes by the title Karous.
Karous - which translates to 'Crow' in English - looks similar to Chaos Field and especially Radilgy, using many of the same gameplay mechanics of both games and featuring some of the cell-shading style used in Radilgy. The game is about a girl born of a union between an angel and a human. She gets firepower by gaining equipments like a sword, shield and guns. The graphics stick to the basics black and white palette of colours to give the game a gothic feel.
You can read more right here on DCEmu. Thanks to Phoebus for spotting the news item.

 The Witcher Preview (PC)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:56 PM
Category: Role Playing

There's a preview for The Witcher over on RPG Vault and here is a snatch:
The primary attraction is the protagonist, a moody, cynical anti-hero whose motivation is more mercenary than altruistic. He's feared by the people rather than respected or admired, and tolerated as a kind of lesser evil compared to the creatures he hunts for his living. He also exhibits vulnerabilities. For instance, his prowess with his fists is decidedly ordinary. When the game begins, his mortality is exposed; he regains consciousness feeling extremely weak, and is unable to remember how he arrived at his condition or much else.
Soooo hit RPG Vault and read the rest of that preview for The Witcher.
