Worthplaying put up some 30 new screenshots from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.A group of stalkers has for the first time reached the very heart of the Zone – Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and brings about a cataclysm on the brink of a catastrophe. An immense blowout of anomalous energy changes the Zone. There are no more reliable and relatively safe roads. The entire levels vanish in the outbursts of anomalies. Stalkers and even expeditions die or end up sealed on the lost territories. New areas, which remained unknown since the time of the Zone emergence, appear on the Zone map. The Zone continues to shake with blowouts. The Zone is unstable. The anomalous activity is at its maximum. Have a look at those S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky screens. Personally I think 30 is a bit much at once... so I clicked on 3 and got out of there. ;)

I was looking around IGN and noticed they put up a recent preview for Section 8, a futuristic FPS that is being developed by TimeGate.Just as with Battlefield before it, Section 8 will have vehicles playing a large role in its gameplay. But unlike Battlefield, Section 8's method of earning these vehicles is based around a monetary system where players build their wad of cash by taking down enemies and capturing command points. Have a look at that preview for Section 8.

There's a small article over on EuroGamer that reports former Xbox Europe boss, Sandy Duncan as saying that consoles will die out in the next 5 to 10 years....The industry is fundamentally driven by technology. I think dedicated games devices, i.e. consoles and handhelds, will die [out] in the next five to ten years. Apparently the link there leads to other links where the news came down the wire, so to speak.

Over on Game Banshee they put together The Witcher Enhanced Edition Interview where they ask Tom Ohle, Katarzyna Kuczynska, and Mateusz Kanik of CD Projekt about the upcoming Enhanced version of the RPG... plus some othet stuff concering The Witcher.I think it’s safe to say that we’re really happy with the reception The Witcher has received, but we also realize that there’s a lot of room to improve. There’s still a pretty significant audience out there that hasn’t played the game, and that’s a big part of why we’re working on The Witcher Enhanced Edition. For a debut game from a fledgling studio for a “dead platform” in a relatively niche genre, though, I think the game’s success is astounding. The Witcher Enhanced Edition Interview! Go read it!

Wolfwood of Hooked Gamers put up an article / blog post where he talks about the lack of role playing in RPG's.What most developers miss when they make computer RPGs is that RPG stands for role-playing game. It does not stand for adventure game, nor does it stand for hack'n'slash. Although both are part of a good RPG (who doesn't like some action now and then and adventures are a must, naturally), RPG is also much more. You aren't just going through and adventure, killing enemies and looting treasures, you are supposed to be playing a role. Read more from that blog post.

I was looking around for some RPG news and ended up discovering that Jowood has plans for a stand-alone expansion pack (Q3 2008) for Dungeon Lords and also for Dungeon Lords 2 (2009). This was news back in November but I somehow totally missed it. I sure hope Dreamcatcher and Jowood do a better job than Heuristic Park, who are now defunct. The original release of Dungeon Lords was pretty messed up, not only in the bug department but also in the missing features department. I played it, cursed it and wanted to destroy more than giant spiders and dragons afterwards..heh.The as-yet-untitled expansion to the game is currently slated for release in the third quarter of 2008, and will not require the original Dungeon Lords to run. The stand-alone game will serve as a bridge between the first release and Dungeon Lords 2, which will feature an all-new graphics and physics engine, a new epic quest and original art. I'll be keeping my eyes open for more info and when the expansion comes out, I will be checking what people are saying about the game in reviews and on forums before I spend another cent on anything Dungeon Lordsish.... When you first play the game, you start off as this eight-year-old kid who's either a boy or a girl. We're just playing through the first thirty minutes of childhood at the moment. 2404 took the time to put up a Crysis Review and here is a snip:While this game is your basic first-person shooter and feels nearly identical to Far Cry in most ways, it does have some significant departures from your standard shooter fare, in the form of the Nano-suit your character wears. The Nano-suit provides four different powers that you will need to use in order to make it through the journey in one piece. These abilities are triggered via the middle mouse button and are fairly easy to trigger and use on the fly with a little practice. Have a look at that Crysis Review.

If you visit Game Industry Biz you can read this article where THQ director, Michael Fitch, blames piracy for the Iron Lore closure, which leads to his post on the Quarter To Three forums. Two, the numbers on piracy are really astonishing. The research I've seen pegs the piracy rate at between 70-85% on PC in the US, 90%+ in Europe, off the charts in Asia. I didn't believe it at first. It seemed way too high. Then I saw that Bioshock was selling 5 to 1 on console vs. PC. And Call of Duty 4 was selling 10 to 1. These are hardcore games, shooters, classic PC audience stuff. Given the difference in install base, I can't believe that there's that big of a difference in who played these games, but I guess there can be in who actually payed for them. Michael's post covers more than just piracy but also the problems with hardware vendors, driver issues and bad game reviewers.
