Command & Conquer: Renegade Preview - PC Gameplay

PC Gameplay has written a new preview of Westwood's upcoming 1st-person shooter, Command & Conquer: Renegade. Here's a blurb from it:Given the success of games like Counter-Strike, perhaps the multiplayer options might alter opinions. In the single-player game, Westwood has done a great job of conveying the feeling you’re part of a bigger war and this is carried through into ‘C&C mode’. Two teams attempt to destroy each other’s base or place an ‘end game’ beacon inside. Buildings function similar to their strategy counterparts, so Tiberium processed in the refinery or credits earned from kills can be used to purchase different character classes and vehicles, lending the mode a subtle tactical sheen. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare Ships!

Infogrames announced today that Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare began shipping to stores this week for PlayStation, PC and Game Boy Color. Edward Carnby, the famed supernatural detective, is back in his fourth installment of the franchise, and this time it will take more than his trusty pistol to keep him alive! "Alone in the Dark is the ultimate survival-horror game that for years the industry has tried to mimic," said Tom Richardson, director of marketing for Infogrames, Inc.'s Los Angeles label. "With the newest incarnation of the series already reaching the #1 spot in Europe and the tremendous sell-in we've had in the US, it proves that Alone in the Dark still has the formula necessary to entice the fans. Consumers have been clambering to get their hands on Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare ever since the title was announced." In AITD: The New Nightmare, two diverse adventures await players as they assume the role of either Edward Carnby or Aline Cedrac, a determined young archaeologist, and its up to them to reclaim three ancient tablets before the ultimate evil is unleashed on Shadow Island. Throughout the game, Carnby and Aline are faced with mysterious puzzles, demonic monsters, and disturbing events taking place. To provide clues for difficult situations, or comic relief to break the suspense, players can summon the other character via walkie-talkie any time throughout the game. As in the first three Alone in the Dark titles, AITD: The New Nightmare stays true to its successful formula of innovative camera angles, suspenseful in-depth storylines inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and 3D characters set in graphically amazing backgrounds. AITD: The New Nightmare features over 1200 pre-rendered backgrounds, each recreated with varying levels of light, and utilizes sophisticated lighting technology, with the flashlight being the most prominent example. The flashlight serves as a key gameplay element which players can use as a weapon to deter light-sensitive foes, to illuminate rooms void of light switches, or to shine into corners that often hide secret items in their shadows. Insiduous creatures inhabit the island, lurking in dark corners, drop from the ceiling, or wait in the open anxiously anticipating your next move. To combat them, Carnby and Aline gain access to highly innovative light-based weapons, including Carnby's Photopulsar, emitting a blast rendering everything in its path dead and the user temporarily blinded, and Aline's Disc-Launcher, a rapid fire gun emitting magnesium-coated discs great for damaging enemies at close or long range. Making the game even more immersive for players, AITD: The New Nightmare uses an extensive music score, including the original theme song of the game composed by Stewart Copeland, appropriately titled, "Alone in the Dark". A five-time Grammy Award winner for his work with the renowned rock band The Police, Stewart Copeland has brought his distinctive sound to the movies in a series of inventive film scores and now offers his talents to the interactive entertainment industry. Mr. Copeland combined hard-edged rhythmic riffs from electric guitar and acoustic bass with rich sultry effects from electronics along with lyrics that captured the essence of the game's spine-tingling plot. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for PlayStation and PC were developed by DarkWorks and by Pocket Studios for Game Boy Color. The game began shipping to most major retail stores this week with an estimated retail price of $39.95 for PlayStation and PC, and $29.95 for Game Boy Color.

Quake III: Arena CD-Key Check Stopped?

According to Icrontic, the Quake III: Arena master server has stopped checking CD keys. This is not temporary either according to them, since they have been monitoring this development for a few weeks now, and it has completely stopped checking both the validity of CD keys and duplicate CD keys. Chances are they ran the servers to stop the initial piracy of the game, and now the cost of running the checking servers is too much to muster. This is only a rumor, since id Software never commented about it either yet.

GameSpot UK has posted a preview of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. The preview is somewhat brief and does not include new screenshots, but is good way to find out about this game if you foolishly haven't been keeping track of 2015's shooter. Here is a nibble:Seven sweeping campaigns encompassing over 20 levels take in battlefields in France, destroying gun batteries in North Africa, abotaging U-boats in Norway and a devastating recreation of the landing at Omaha Beach, and conclude with a push through the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen into Nazi Germany. The nature of these missions change if you go it alone or form part of a squad, but each shares a specific structure designed to fully immerse players: "Missions come in three parts: infiltration, execution, and ex-filtration. Because PC gamers are mature and experienced there are consequences to your actions and even your inactions.

Category: General |
Inside Mac Games recently got to visit 0Mumbo Jumbo, and so they has written a preview of Myth 3: The Wolf Age. Here's a blurb from it:If you look at the screenshots, there’s a new health meter. A selected unit will have a circle drawn around them on the ground, and a vertical colored line rising from the circle. This line is the health meter, and it looks great. High green lines represent full health. The more injured the unit is, the shorter the line, and it also changes color: yellow for moderate injury, red for almost dead. The visuals are easy to read without taking away from the beauty of the game’s look.Water will also be translucent. As a unit walks into deeper water, you can still see its legs underneath the surface. Yet, to keep the strategy from the previous games, once a unit is fully submerged it can no longer be seen, so you can still hide your wights and thrall in the depths.

The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) presents The CPL 4-Year Anniversary Event, June 28th - July 1st, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Founded in 1997, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL), and its divisions in Europe, Asia and South America, is the leading organizer of professional game tournaments and events, and has an estimated following of about 350,000 gamers worldwide, up from several hundred just a few years ago. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the CPL has created custom computer networks at local gaming competitions for more gamers than any other organization. Almost 900 computer gamers, representing 20 countries, have registered to attend this week's event. The 4-Year Anniversary Event benefits the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center. The DCAC, is a Dallas based, non-profit organization providing a child-friendly environment where law enforcement officials, district attorney's and caseworkers come together to provide needed services to children who have been physically or sexually abused. Currently, there are 48 active and developing centers across the US, providing services to 103 counties, and over 22,400 children each year. "The Dallas Children's Advocacy Center is excited about our involvement with The CPL," says Nichole Nynas, Director of Development for the Advocacy Center. "It's perfect timing as the Center has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of children served and the severity of the cases we have seen since January. At this critical time, the support of the CPL is more important than ever. Proceeds from the Anniversary event will ensure that each child victim of abuse we serve will receive the investigative and therapeutic service they so desperately need." Ms. Nynas says. "The CPL is committed to helping the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center," says Angel Munoz, Founder and President of the CPL. "We know that this is the beginning of a long term relationship and we hope that our involvement helps alleviate the afflictions of children that become the innocent victims of abuse," he says. A check presentation sponsored by the CPL and GodGames will take place on Sunday July 1st at 3:00 p.m. in the ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Dallas. The CPL event sponsors include: Logitech, Intel, Altec Lansing Technologies, ViewSonic, NETGEAR, Monster Cable, VisionTek, Bawls, Alienware and Immersion.

Sega NewsSega has stated that Monkeyball for the Gamecube will be a launch title. Some good news is that Sega's shares are on the rise again. What do Sega Europe actually do? As I reported recently Sony will publish the PS2 titles and now Infogrames reportedly have picked up the right to publish Sega's Nintendo and Xbox titles. Ninty News Nintendo has a development kit shortage at the present and developers will have to do the following to get one. First, no kits are going to any developer who does not yet have a publisher for their proposed title, a strategy to ensure that no kits are wasted on any unsigned games. The publisher then submits a request to Nintendo for the kit or kits, who will then allocate the kits as they see fit through the publisher, who then in turn passes them along to the developer. Despite the hot-potato communication, Nintendo promises the process will move along quickly and the shortage resolved in a few months. To read more on these situations visit GamerWeb.

One of the hottest racing experiences of the year comes to the PlayStation2 computer entertainment system with the release of Infogrames NASCAR® Heat 2002. Challenge top NASCAR drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Matt Kenseth and more, head-to-head in the ultimate test of racing skill on actual NASCAR tracks of the 2001 Winston Cup season. Selectable racing modes capture all the thrills, drama, and split-second decisions of the on-the-edge world of the NASCAR driver. In NASCAR Heat 2002 players choose between Beat the Heat, Race the Pro, Head-to-Head, Championship and Single Race modes in one of the most intense racing games that has ever been brought to a gaming console. Single Race and Championship modes put gamers in the seat of powerful stock cars as they try to best the stars of NASCAR on just one track or the tracks of the entire 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Season. Quake Gets Fived!

Romero: Quake's design was VERY different from the game that was released. It was much more of a D&D-based game with a main character named Quake who had an awesome hammer that would grow in power as the game progressed. At one point in November 1995, we decided to change the design to something we were more comfortable creating -- FPS weapons with a few twists. After the major redesign, the game underwent a few more smaller redesigns (to cut down development time) and we released the Quake that everyone knows today.Check out this article on Methos Quake to see the rest of the exclusive interview with John Romero and id softwares Tim Willis.

Microsoft's X-box is due for release 3 days after the Gamecube. Titles include Metal Gear Solid X, Malice, Shrek, Crash Bandicoot X and Tecmo's highly anticipated Dead or Alive 3. As part of their new 'third party' plans Sega will be releasing Gun Valkyrie and Jet Set Radio Future for the console. There is a rumored Panzer Dragoon 4 game too, which will have gamers clambering over each other to get a copy. I just managed to get my hands on Panzer Saga for the Saturn, which is about as rare as gold dust. Bill Gates has had to pay a sum of money to X-Box technologies for stealing the name he he. The X-Box has not been received well in Japan though so many are wondering whether Bill Gates will fall smack on his nerdy face or not. Be sure to check out www.xbox.com for more information.

Tomorrow is a special day, its history’s most famous hedgehogs 10th anniversary. To celebrate this event Sonic Team will be holding a special birthday party in Japan where guests are encouraged to bring a present. The lucky guests will receive special Sonic related merchandise. Sonic and friends will be making a cameo in Virtua Striker 3, the FC Sonic team will be made up of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, DR. Eggman and a bunch of chaos. Sonic and pals will also be making an appearance in Phantasy Star Online Version 2 in the lobby around the time of his anniversary. A limited edition birthday pack which, will be for Japan only, is being released alongside the Sonic Adventure 2 game, which contains a gold coin, history booklet and music cd. This will be available the first two days of release and will cost the same as the game on its own. If you want to get your hands on one you better find an import store fast, vie pre-ordered mine along with the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure 2 as I own a Jap DC. Check out bluehedgehog.net for piccies. Some bad news is that Sierra's Half-Life for the DC has been canned as we all expected (no surprise there then). I personally think its a real shame about the DC, it must be the most under-rated console of all time.

There isn't really too much to say about the PS2, same old story really with its endless sequels but it does have all the hype surrounding Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X and Gran Turismo 3. Lets hope they live up to the hype as in my opinion the PS2 hasn't really got that much going for it at the moment. Sega and Sony have been getting pally as of late with plans for online games that are to be released on the PS2 and DC to be played head to head i.e. PS2 owners will be able to compete with DC owners online with the same game. Sony will also be releasing Sega's first 7 titles in Europe for the PS2, which are Virtua Fighter 4, K-project (a music based action/shooter), Space Channel 5, Ecco the dolphin, Ferrari 355, Head Hunter and yet another Space Channel 5.

This week in the world of console gaming saw the release of the Gameboy Advance in Europe. The unit is already selling well in the US (over 500,000 units sold in the first week alone). The Gameboy Advance looks a great buy with retro software such as F-Zero and Mario Advance (basically Mario 2). Future games are looking great too, I can't wait for Sonic Advance, the screens look great. There are already 2 limited edition Pokemon centre Gameboy Advance console, which were released in Japan, so check out those import stores if you want to get your hands on one. Excitement is growing over the upcoming release of the Gamecube, which will retail for around $200. The line-up of games looks amazing. Titles include Pikmin, Smash Brothers Melee, Star Fox Adventures, Wave Race, Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion and Super Monkey Ball. Capcom's Mickey game looks stunning and for all you fans of Sega's Sonic Team, Yuji Naka has hinted that this is the console to own. Sega is developing Phantasy Star Version 2 for Nintendo's machine and lets keep our fingers crossed and hope we shall see Sonic on the Gamecube (other than his feature in the upcoming virtua striker 3). Games are looking to retail for around $50. Be sure to check out www.nintendo.com for more information.

At the end of this month, no more of those ultra-uncool, perpetually annoying (or is that annoyingly perpetual?), maniacally-multiplying..... ever-evil pop-ups! That's when the campaign is set to end, and I'm upholding my end of the bargain by holding out until then to get rid of them. But that little experiment gone wrong will be a thing of the past! And there was much rejoicing......

Operation Flashpoint Review - GamesDomain

GamesDomain posted a review of the recently released U.K version of the highly-anticipated military simulation, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. Here's a blurb from their review:Equally convincing is the weaponry modelling. Bohemia, the game's developers, have all served in the Czech army, and brought their real-life experiences of eighties warfare to the game. As in Counter-Strike, firing while running is inaccurate to the extent where you might as well save your ammo and resort to bad language. Reloading takes time, and careful aim is the key to success. Most conflicts take place in expansive outdoor areas, so there's always plenty of space for the enemy to utilise. Leading a moving target with a sniper rifle is crucial - sniping is much more of a skill here than in other games. The vehicles, too, have an air of authenticity about them. The game includes a decent range, from jeeps and trucks to various tanks, anti-aircraft vehicles and even helicopters. They can be crewed by more than one man; often you'll be transporting your squad in the back of a truck, or riding a jeep with three others. You can even command your own tank, and issue orders to a gunner and driver.

Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today the release of Twisted Metal:Black for the PlayStation2. Based on the successful Twisted Metal franchise, Twisted Metal:Black brings a whole new look and feel to the series, catapulting players into a darker gameplay environment than before. Twisted Metal:Black is designed and developed by the creators of Twisted Metal 1 and 2. When the original Twisted Metal game was released in 1995, the development team was credited with establishing 3D car combat in videogaming. Twisted Metal 2 was released to critical claim in 1997 and remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with more than 1.9 million units sold in North America to date. Overall, the Twisted Metal franchise has sold close to five million units in North America, making it the best-selling car combat series ever. Calypso, the mastermind behind the Twisted Metal battles, returns once more to host a contest of wreckage and devastation. He has plucked some prime contestants straight out of an asylum and has promised these otherwise doomed souls a single wish should they defeat their opponents in a battle of twisted metal. As the carnage unfolds, players will learn how and why these motorists were locked up behind the walls of insanity. Twisted Metal:Black features enhanced player environments with moving traffic, changing weather conditions, living pedestrians and interactive objects. Destruction is at the game's core, but strategy is essential for creative frags, made possible by the many different weapons and combo attacks.

I stumbled across a link to a site that has a very interesting article about the Windows Operating System's behind the scenes work. There are folders on your computer that Microsoft has tried hard to keep secret. Within these folders you will find two (major) things: Microsoft Internet Explorer has been logging all of the sites you have ever visited -- even after you've cleared your cache, and Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express has been logging ALL of your e-mail correspondence -- even after you've erased them from your trashbin. (This also includes all incoming and outgoing e-mail attachments.) And believe me, that's not even the half of it. Read all about it here.
