Some of you may remember the wrestler Maxx Payne. He's been retired for a few years now, so you might be more familiar with the video game character Max Payne. I don't know why it hasn't happened sooner, but the wrestler filed a $10 million dollar lawsuit against Rockstar Games, 3D Realms, Remedy Entertainment for stealing his name."I left wrestling to come home to Utah and be with my family and I find myself in the biggest battle of my life - to save my identity," said the ex-fighter, whose real name is Darryl Peterson. "They stole something from me that I'm not going to give up." It will be interesting to see where this goes. I remember watching Maxx Payne wrestle along side Cactus Jack in WCW, however, many of you will remember Maxx Payne for his very corny WWE (then called WWF) gimmick "Man Mountain Rock". We'll let you know how this unfolds.

Raven's Mike Gummelt updated his .plan with praise for a new mod for JK2:Well, it's been a long time since I've updated my .plan file, but I have a good reason. I just downloaded and played the "Colosseum" mod (by Jake Keating) for Jedi Knight II and, I have to say, it kicks ASS! This is the best, most polished mod I've ever seen for one of our games!
I am thoroughly impressed! The mod shows not only an impressive understanding of multiple and diverse systems in the game (the UI, the sabers, scripting, in-game cinematics, pre-rendered cinematics, music, mapping, modelling, texturing, effects, sounds, etc., etc.) but also a real "director's eye" for creating a compelling story within the context of exciting and fun gameplay... not to mention presenting the entire package in a slick, professional style! And I love the educational aspect of it, too! You can find out more about the mod and download it from Jake Keating's Colosseum website.

I just found out that Johnny Cash has been nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards for his performance of the Nine Inch Nails classic, Hurt. I know this sounds completely bizarre on all fronts. First, the thought of Johnny covering a NIN tune is mindblowing (I didn't know he covered this song until today). Second, it's a bit shocking to know that MTV actually gave him nominations. Mr. Cash did have a statement. (E!) "I am overwhelmed by this great honor," the unlikely VMA candidate said in a written statement. "I thank you all for thinking of me. It's been 48 years since I cut my first record and it's nice that people are still digging them up." I like Johnny Cash and I like NIN, so you'd better believe I'll be rooting for him to take home at least one of the nominations he recieved. Among them is Video Of The Year, Best Male Video, and Best Direction.

Announced some time ago, the Phantom gaming console has been met with a lot of criticism. Not much is known about the console, but it looks like that will be changing. Check out the official site for the Phantom to find some details of the console. You can also sign up to beta test the console. Better yet, the unveiling of the system is getting closer, so there should be even more details available soon.

QuakeCon attendees will be given the chance to go toe-to-toe at the Activision/id Software booth, in a sneak preview of the 4-player DOOM 3 out-of-the-box deathmatch experience."What better way to celebrate QuakeCon than to unveil to our fans a preview of DOOM 3 multiplayer," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "While everyone knows that DOOM 3 is the most terrifying and scary single player experience ever created, multiplayer delivers the intense competitive action that our fans can count on. It's a natural to debut the DOOM 3 multiplayer experience at QuakeCon, the world's preeminent fan-based multiplayer gaming event." QuakeCon attendees will have the chance to sample DOOM 3's four-player Deathmatch on a level co-developed by id Software and U.K.-based developer Splash Damage, Ltd. Sega Sports has released more on their newest pigskin game ESPN NFL Football. This new feature will let the players have access to their own "Crib", in which they can decorate it with various unlockables like chairs, knick knacks and mini games. The new feature should keep gamers playing the game longer than they might normally play. With this feature, and the previously announced first person mode, ESPN NFL Football seems dead set on giving football fans a rich and new experience.

It could happen. As early as this year too. Rumors have been circulating for months that Rockstar Games has been planning to get Grand Theft Auto to the Xbox. Currently Sony has the GTA games exclusive to their console but this might turn the tables right around. Word has it that Rockstar may release the latest GTA game on Xbox under the name Vice City. No Grand Theft Auto in the title anywhere. Seems a bit hokey to me, but if there's a contract loophole that will allow this, then Xbox gamers will be enjoying car stealing, hooker beating, senseless violence gameplay later this year.

THQ has announced a change of name for it's upcoming game Sphinx And The Shadow Of Set. In a move to make the game title match the game's content, it will now be called Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy. Not a huge change as everyone will probably call it simply Sphinx, but it's a change none the less.

The 1986 classic Sega racer, OutRun, is getting a sequel that will hit arcades in the near future. You will be able to drive a variety of different Ferrari licenced vehicles, past and present. The game will run on the Xbox-based Chihiro hardware for coin-op machines and is due to release in Japan later this year. No word on a console version, but an Xbox port is an obvious choice of platform if they wish to bring it to the home systems.

Sega Sports has announced that they are changing things up a bit this year with their ESPN NFL Football franchise by adding a first person mode to the game. You'll be able to play through the helmets of the players and get a very close up view of the action on the field. If the game gets a bit too fast paced for you, you can use bullet time to find that hole in the line and break through. Whether or not this will be a truly innovative feature or just a gimmick has yet to be seen, but Sega is hoping for it to be a "Madden Killer" feature.

Midway Games is bringing back their popular arcade shooter to the consoles in the first person shooter format for the Playstation 2 and Xbox consoles. (IGN) Coined as a "sci-fi meets government cover-up" FPS, Area 51 takes place in the conspiratorial governmental Nevada base Area 51 and enables players to step into the shiny, high-lace boots of Lt. Nick Cross, a hazardous biological waste specialist who is sent in to investigate occurrences requiring his particular training. Quickly enough, Cross discovers alien creatures and a deadly mutagen that infects him. Because Nick Cross is infected, the alien mutagen enhances his physical abilities beyond the scope of normal humans and before too long, Cross learns he must root out the truth behind Area 51 and (of course) save himself and the entire earth in the process. The game will have a strong single player mode, but also in the works is online play which will benefit both console platforms as they continue to build their online libraries. Look for it in 2004.

So much for Activision's solid lineup of Star Trek games. The company has filed a suit against Viacom for breach of contract because of a lack of support for the Star Trek series. Activision claims "significant damage" because of the lack of support. In its complaint, which was filed in the Superior Court of the State of California on June 30, 2003, Activision accused Viacom of breaching its fundamental promise to continue exploiting the Star Trek franchise consistent with its practice at the time the agreement was signed in 1998. "Activision cannot successfully develop and sell Star Trek video games without the product exploitation and support promised by Viacom. A continuing pipeline of movie and television production, and related marketing, is absolutely crucial to the success of video games based on a property such as Star Trek," charged Activision in its court filings. Viacom is said to be disappointed by this turn of events and claims the lawsuit is just a ploy for a renegotiation in the 10 year contract between the companies. Despite Activision's claim that no movies are planned for the future, Viacom also states that this is untrue and new movies are planned.

The ultimate Xbox game is finally drawing closer and closer to its home on the PC (remember, it was in the works for the PC and the Mac first). Multiplayer is still being improved and they are working towards a final release date soon.In the last 5 weeks or so, we’ve been focused on two main development challenges: unleashing the full power of our sparkling new network architecture to kick-ass on the Internet and making sure we deliver a solid experience on a wide range of hardware configuration and systems. The progress on both fronts is very good and we are on track to hit our current schedule. While I can’t confirm a release date yet (hang tight – it’s coming very soon), I can confirm that we are internally working towards a solid release date. You can read more about the update at the official Halo site. I've got this game on the Xbox already but I am probably going to snag this new version as it looks far superior and the multiplayer is to die for. We'll let you know when more information surfaces.
